Punta Marenco Lodge
Reviewed 9 April 2017

Extraordinary Lodge, rather rustic and simple but still cosy with an amazing view over the sea.
Arrival by boat was already an adventure and fun for us.
We found a huge variety of birds and further animals and beautiful lonely beaches around the lodge.
The service was very friendly and helpful, the meals were simple but delicious
We joined 3 tours organized by the lodge:
- Corcovado Nationalpark, - Isla del Cano Snorkeling tour, - and night tour by Oscar
All of them were amazing.
For us Punta Marenco Lodge was one of the most beautiful places in Costa Rica during our 3 weeks journey.

Punta Marenco Lodge is a two hour walk from the closest town. So you arrive by boat, onto a beach. You will get your feet wet: at both ends. (Or you can walk.) Then you walk uphill for ten minutes. There's electricity only between five and ten p.m. There are no ceiling fans, certainly no air conditioning.
So that's the warning for all those thinking they're booking a resort. This is a well run, very efficient jungle camp on a hill above the Pacific. They feed you well, but not fancy. Coati, agouti, tapirs, iguanas, monkeys, are all around you, along with a multitude of bird species, seen from the open air restaurant. The wood-framed cabins are entirely screened, so the ocean breeze keeps them cool. The water supply is piped on the surface, so in the morning it's cold, but at midday it's become very hot. Just let it run for a while and the cool spring water will eventually arrive.
There's a beach down a long flight of stairs. It's a beautiful beach, with some big breakers. 10 minutes farther south is a better surfing beach and a river pool for fresh water swimming. There's a few crocs, but no worries.
Some people complain that the advertised Wi-Fi doesn't exist. It does. You have to stand under the mango tree by cabin twelve at low tide. I think this is my favorite thing about this place. (A new microwave tower may soon be built on Cano Island. Long story.)
I love this lodge. I spent many happy hours with camera and sketch pad at the open air restaurant watching tropical life come and go: hummingbirds, honey creepers, tanagers, vultures, hawks and kites, toucans, macaws, red-lored parrots - the list goes on and on. And I met visitors from all over the world.
Be willing to sweat. Be willing to slow down. And remember: it's $60 a night, with three meals!

The place is located at a very beautiful place. The rooms were decently nice. The view waking up was wonderful but the service was not amazing. Meal times were hardly set in stone and when a time was given, the food was always an hour late. They also dump their trash in a trash pit outside created by them which is obviously not environmentally safe and when we ventured back there, we got a lot of dirty looks.

Room Tip: great views, beware of capuchin monkeys.

I loved this place. From the 1.5 hour boat ride from Sierpe, to the wet entry landing off the boat to the 300m uphill walk to get to the lodge, this piece of the world is great. If you like birds, monkeys and quiet, you will like Punta Marenco lodge. This is not a luxury hotel. It is a rustic beautiful place where there is no electricity. The generators come on at 5 pm till 10 pm for you to charge camera's, phones and have lights in the rooms. I could not hear the generators. We stayed in room 5. There were 2 single beds and a double for our family. The room was clean and beds were nicely made upon our arrival. The screened in cabin allows the breeze to keep you cool in this hot humid climate. The cold shower worked for us since we were hot all the time. The deck off our cabin had a great view of the ocean. The view was enhanced when the toucans, scarlet macaws and all sorts of other birds flew by. The lodge likes to book package deals, 2 or 3 night stays with outings on each day. We did some of the outing but also liked to explore the beaches and rivers ourselves. We ended up staying for 5 nights. The staff made suggestions on where to go and what to see. The meals where good, though we found there was too much food. Our morning fruit plate was wonderful. It worked better for us when they decided to do a morning buffet. This allowed us to eat what we wanted and not waste food. The staff were very accommodating to my son who does not like fish. All the staff were very friendly.
The common area offered tea and coffee all day long.
If you go don't forget to bring your head lamp (flashlight). It is dark after dinner and you need to see your way back to your cabin.
