On our 1st night during our recent trip to Costa Rica, we dined here out of convenience- because it was the 1st place we saw and very close to where we stayed in Punta Leona. Our dinner started off on a high note when the bread service was brought out- in fancy silver dishes with parmesan and a chili oil and an herbed oil- and the bread was oh so perfectly fresh and warm! I forget the name of the app we shared but it was like crispy little bowls made of plantains and filled with shrimp and cheese- they were crunchy and unlike anything I've had before and SO DELICIOUS! For my entrée I had a seafood platter type dish that was shrimp, clams and crab in a tequila and cashew sauce. The flavors were excellent- however there was not much meat in the crab and one piece was actually a little muddy. I feel like the crab could have just been left out altogether but the rest of it was really good and I ate all I could until I could fit in no more. My husband ordered a typical Costa Rican dish and was very happy with it. The highlight of the meal though was the SERVICE! THAT'S what made us come back in 2 more times. The 2nd time we just stopped in for a drink- I kept reading about these mojitos they're known for- and yes they are as good as their reputation claims to be- served with a stick of sugar cane and all! After once again having such welcoming and gracious service by the manager Richard and staff, we decided to come here for our final dinner of the trip and I'm so glad we did! This time we started with a ceviche which may have been the best one I had on the trip- and trust me, I had A LOT of ceviche! For an entrée I had the shrimp with tamarind and bacon which is not a combination I would ever had thought of but believe me it works. Richard was basically treating us like VIPs by this visit and even sent us out a special digestif shot to end our meal with. I hope the owners know what a gem Richard is- his love of food and passion for taking care of people shines in everything thing he does! It wasn't just Richard though- he is managing a whole staff of truly wonderful and hospitable employees including his brother Girson (spell?) and Glenn. On top of all that, we found the items to be very reasonably priced for the quality of food and service. We ate at several restaurants in the area where the food was really good- almost comparable, but the service at Los Toneles puts it over the top. Wonderful memories and we hope to get a chance to go back one day!
