“A very lovely zoo :)”
Reviewed 14 June 2016 for a stay in June 2016

We had a lovely time at Villa Salju. The staff were very friendly and eager to help us out with anything. The pool and garden were lovely, we especially liked the hut area which was great for relaxing out of the sun. Beds were big and comfortable, kitchen was fully equipped and there was plenty of space for six people.

The location was also great, close to the Canggu short cut which makes everything accessible and also close enough to Seminyak to get there quickly.

There were a couple of downsides though. Our interactions with the villa manager felt quite transactional and there seemed to be extra costs coming up that we weren't aware of in advance. We also had a barrage of animals creeping into one of the bathrooms - a kitten, a mouse and a snake. The mouse even made its way into the bedroom and onto the bed while I was napping which while making for a funny story, was not very enjoyable at the time.

Overall, I would recommend Villa Salju however I would suggest the management try to add a more personal touch in their interactions with guests.

“Dangerous cooking stove and poorly run”
Reviewed 29 May 2016 for a stay in May 2016

To cut a long story short, we do not recommend to stay at Villa Salju.

We come to Bali often and wanted to try something new for a change, and booked this villa based on the pictures and large number of reviews.

Villa design and style is obviously subjective and a matter of taste. Wear and tear however is not, and clearly this villa has its glory days behind. Repair works remain undone across the property and the owner does not seem to bother too much, as long as the rent keeps coming.

The highlight of our stay however was the EXPLOSION of the cooking stove (see pictures attached, the stove door got blown open from the pressure and heat) one morning and my partner was very lucky to have only her dress ripped into pieces and luckily not got any burns. This could have gone seriously wrong, and the stove is a hazard for your life! If you read through previous reviews, you will find mentioning of the overheating and probably leaking stove already, I guess we should have paid more attention to that.

To our surprise, villa manager Putru seemed more concerned about the oven instead of asking about the well-being of my partner.

We decided to check out on the spot and request our money back for the remaining days. We did get our money back however, no apology or expression of any kind of regret for the incident. Instead, owner Susan wanted to negotiate over the value of the dress that got burned. Not to mention the time and hassle for a screwed up morning to move to a new place.

Fortunately we found a much nicer villa, which we will likely go back to.

Dear Jay (we note that you have used a pseudonym for your review),
We were expecting your review. At check-out we did not agree to your outrageous demands for refunds and payments, at which point you yelled at our staff and physically threatened our manager. You said you will write a review so that no-one would ever again stay at Villa Salju. So here we are.
Firstly, no oven issue has ever been mentioned in any of our past reviews. We have never experienced any issues whatsoever with this appliance.
Secondly, we regret the incident regarding the oven. However I do find it strange that you chose to blame this incident entirely on us. Let’s look at the facts. Turning on the gas without igniting it causes LPG gas to build up in the oven space. When your travelling companion did this and then ignited the gas rings above, this invariably lead to the issue you have described. Frankly, we are so lucky that no-one was hurt by this. I understand that mistakes can be made, but to then blame us for the negligence of one of your own guests? This is not normal. It is hardly a reason to accuse us, let alone check out with threats against our staff and the exaggerated histrionics that you embarrassingly displayed.
In hindsight, we should have smelled a rat. Your method of aggressive bargaining for a reduction on every single aspect of your stay prior to arrival was unusual and should have set off warning bells for us. We should have known something was amiss after your list of reasons about why you could not follow the usual reservation process, or send the security deposit as requested, or stick to the payment terms of the agreement. On arrival, you lambasted our staff when they asked you to settle payment, when you had expressly agreed to this in our email exchange (and as is stated in the rental agreement provided to you five days prior).
From the moment you checked in you had our staff on edge and feeling intimidated. In every single interaction with our staff you conducted yourself with a pompous and self-important attitude, looking down your noise at everyone. You were rude and complained every single day. Our housekeepers are young ladies and gentlemen who may be from a developing country and may be born without privilege, but who have trained to improve themselves and work very hard to support whole extended families back in their home village. They do not deserve to be bullied and spoken down to.
We experienced you as a young arrogant western man with an inflated sense of entitlement striving to impress his Asian lady friend. Your behaviour throughout your five nights stay was impolite and offensive, and a painfully bad reflection on you.
We acted without reproach, immediately returning all of your unused nights of stay in full, returning your security deposit in full and even giving you money towards your girlfriend’s dress (which had very small hole, and was in no way ripped as you suggest) as an act of goodwill.
By the way, the gas oven maintenance specialist who arrived within one hour of your issue confirmed that the oven is working perfectly (and confirming the cause as the gas oven being turned on incorrectly).
Finally, I would invite readers of this review to read your other postings to see just what a petulant and unpleasant guest you are.
We have over 600 positive reviews for our properties (and 92/108 five star reviews for Villa Salju alone), and have dealt with over 1,800 groups of guests. Frankly, we know the range of normal guest behaviour, and we can confidently say that your behaviour falls outside the bounds of normalcy and acceptability.

“The perfect oasis to explore the bustling city areas”
Reviewed 21 April 2016 for a stay in April 2016

Villa Salju was a perfect experience for my family and I (2 adults--2 kids).

PROPERTY: Excellent layout with large outdoor seating pavilion and deck. (I got the recommended massage and Pedicure right there in the pavilion while the family quietly hung out at sunset on the lanai. It was great.) Lovely furnishings, strong A/C in all bedrooms with good light-block curtains, I liked that there was one bedroom upstairs because that's where I put my 4 year old and locked the door to the pool at night (with a key that I kept) so I had NO fears that he would up and decide to swim before I woke. The boys loved the coy pond steps to the other bedroom, even getting to feed them some mornings.

STAFF: Putri greeted us and set us up and took care of us. Our welcome dinner was amazing made by the chef! We had breakfast cooked at whatever time we liked and the staff was wonderful. Ivory and Adi cooked a wonderful breakfast with fruit, mushrooms/tomatos, eggs, toast, banana pancakes with palm syrup--or traditional Indonesian, whatever we asked and it was GOOD. Ivory was so kind and sweet to my boys! They present you with the receipts to sign every morning. They are very meticulous. The clothes were washed and beds were made like magic and the staff were present when you needed them and unobtrusive when you didn't. You had the villa to yourself after they left for the afternoon. (depending on when you started them for breakfast in the morning) Security was there overnight keeping an aye out too. Though there were no problems.

GOOD LOCATION:While here we explored a lot of Canggu (very close 10 min drive with waterpark, trampoline jump, Milk and Madu restaurant) Seminyak (bit further--another 10-15 minutes), and Ubud (day trip) as well as Kuta with the help of the Villa recommended driver Putu. He was GREAT. Fabulous driver, excellent with kids, very good English, and so fun. He took us to restaurants that were good at local food and some in Ubud that had such great views and service. Just tell him what you are looking for--we wanted less commercial more local. He obliged and even took us to an amazing take out place to grab and eat in the villa. Just book him as your driver for the week, so worth the relaxing and safety without having to worry about finding things! The villa has a rice field in front of it. It was amazing to watch them harvest it. (That's something you won't get in Seminyak--too crowded!)

Final note on location:--any CROSSFITERS??? The Gym is literally at the end of the gang (lane) so my husband walked and got in a great WOD every morning before breakfast. He needed it the way we ate in Bali thanks to the staff!

“Great family stay at Villa Salju”
Reviewed 11 March 2016 for a stay in March 2016

Making arrangements prior to our stay was a breeze - Susan was really helpful and arranged everything - also provided us with lots of tips and advice. From arrival we (a family of 6) were welcomed by the team and then spoilt with all our needs attended to - relaxing massages, Amazing feasts for breakfast each morning cooked by Ivory, who always happy and smiling! Being driven around each day by Gede, who was helpful and patient and took us where ever we wanted to go - he was spot on with his suggestions for places to eat ! Only problem was - I wish we had been able to stay for longer so we could have spent more time relaxing by the pool at the villa!!
