We stopped in on our way out of Talkeetna to grab coffees for the road. Literally had the best cookies of my life.

The place is really cute with some native decor worth buying. Had some yummy sandwiches and soup. Service was somewhat slow. Make sure you use the northern lights coupon here
About 10 miles before you get to Talkeetna, is a small sign announcing The Flying Squirrel which is set back in the trees. Inside is a delightful restaurant serving soup and sandwiches made with freshly baked bread, and fresh vegetables, often from their own garden. Their cookies are also delicious (I like the rosemary shortcake). There are often surprising food parings. You can also buy fresh bread and there are some fun fruit drinks. There is a little toy kitchen that keeps the kids entertained while waiting for the food. You order at the counter, menu is on a chalkboard. The food is brought to your table. Pour your own water and get your own silverware from the shelves next to the tables. We take our daughter and her kids everytime we are in town.
What a great find on our side trip as we headed to Denali. We loaded up on their baked goods and were delighted that they had several gluten free options for my companion with celiac. Our favs were their double chocolate peanut butter cookies and their zebra cookies. Wow! OK, they were so good that on our way back south after our Denali visit we loaded up on goodies there again.
Ate here twice while in Talkeetna. Lunch first day had a frantastic grilled cheese sandwich and soup. Soup was split pea and the peas were not fully cooked but it was still good. Breakfast the next time, had a egg bagel sandwich. It was bagel day so the bagel was fresh made. They have an open kitchen so you can watch as they bake their wonderful baked goods. Had a mango ginger scone and zebra cookie. Wish they were down the street from me in PA.
