This tour is a must if you wish to know the history of South Africa. You get to know why Ghandi was in South Africa and how the founder of the notion for freedom. I will not spoil by saying more as this is a definite must when you are in Durban! But be prepared!! Some areas are not for the squeamish.

Our tour guide Jenny was nice and friendly and she has explained a lot about the city and its history. However, the city itself does not have many attractions, so don't expect something extraordinary. It seemed to be safe in the city but it is highly recommended not to show your expensive mobiles and cameras. Try to shorten your visit to mosque, though, it is very nice, especially inside, however, the tour guide from there spoke only about Islam and not about mosque's history. If you are familiar with this religion or used to live in Muslim country, you will probably find it boring. Other tourists, however, seemed quite involved and asked a lot of questions. Put on comfortable shoes, the tours lasted almost 3 hours.

We loved the leisurely Sunday walks we made along the Durban beachfront. It was very relaxed and we felt very safe walking around this area both during the day and in the evening while looking for a good restaurant to dine at.

Durban Tourism offer various half day walking tours in the centre of the city for a maximum of 6 people. I did the cultural tour which included the city centre, traditional African herbal/medicine market, markets for food and handicrafts, church, mosque, etc. Whilst some of these places would have been fine to go on my own, there were areas I would never have seen outside of this walking tour. The guide was excellent, knowledgeable and responsive to the pace and interest of our small group. Without this walking tour I would have mainly seen the glitzy side of Durban - this provided access to the buzz, culture and uniqueness of the city centre. The tour leaves from the Tourist Junction, 160 (Monty Naicker ) Pine Street. Durban (the Old Station Building). Highly recommended.
