This small museum is well worth visiting...the gold displays are wonderful...and it makes one appreciate the true glory of this precious metal. Nice shop with some beautiful gold on offer at a price...
This museum is housed in the Martine Melck house in Cape Town. While there is still a goldsmith studio on the property, the current exhibit is primarily dedicated to detailing the life of Nelson Mandela. However, there is one room dedicated to detailing the gold routes through the African Continent in pretty significant detail.
The remaining utilize a variety of media, including printed canvases, videos, encased artifacts and even plants to provide an overview of Nelson Mandela’s life and his contributions to the anti-apartheid movement. We learn about his young years as the child of a chief, his education, his participation in ANC through to his imprisonment, Presidency and ultimately his passing.
I found it particularly powerful to see the shovels and pick axe that Mr. Mandela used at the Lime Quarry during his imprisonment on Robben Island. This is in contrast to an actual ballot box and an image of Mr. Mandela voting following his release from prison.
This was a fascinating exhibit in a beautiful building that I very much enjoyed.
Set in downtown Cape Town, the Martin Melck house is a fine example of colonial architecture reminiscent of early Cape Town. Well restored and converted into the Gold of Africa Museum, the Martin Melck house at present boasts a Mandela exhibit. The interesting history of the house itself (and that of the man who built it), the wonderful restoration work and the educational and cultural experience make this attraction a must visit.
Easily accessible... The museum is a must visit for kids and adult alike.. It's interesting how it takes you through the history of gold in Africa... Plus the artifacts on display are simply dazzling... One can buy a little souvenir from the museum shop for memory sake
Fantastic exhibit...just amazing. Perfect thing to do after having come back from Robben Island. This comprehensive look into the entire life of Mandiba was so insightful...I had no idea of how interesting and complex his life was. Loved the stories of his childhood and parents. The rest of the museum had some things on gold with an interesting working goldsmith shop in in the back. Nicely restored building, friendly staff and interesting gift shop.
Wow, what a rich and rewarding experience. Entered the quaint museum with low expectation, experienced a multi-level explosion of artefacts and history about this precious metal! Perfect for a rainy or windy day.
