This place on the map - and no prior knowledge of Cape Town - looks slightly out of the way. It's not. It's actually in a very good area for visitors, with a little clutch of restaurants, bars, shops, and a launderette just around the corner, and a very trendy street full of great bars, shops, food options on the main road (Kloof St?) 2 mins away. Easy to get into town or towards Table Mountain (or Camps Bay) via taxi or bus,or just by walking. We didn't stay here at first for the location reason, but it was a much much better area than the place where we did stay. Don't be confused by location away from Sea or Long St (a dump). This is best area I saw in over a week in the city.

As for the hotel itself, it's a decent value, comfortable, easygoing place. The guys at reception are friendly and helpful without being too full on.

Highly recommended all round.

Room Tip: Good double room out the back. Not bad twin upstairs. The 6 bed dorm at front on left, is a little c...

Amber Tree Lodge sits in a great position above Long Street. Very handy for all the best bars & eateries in Cape Town. The atmosphere here is very good with a lovely lounge area and upstairs balcony. The rooms are not that big and the lack of a/c does make it a bit hot especially when the sun streams in early. The shower rooms could do with re grouting, however they are clean enough. The host Bruce was excellent, nothing was too much trouble.
All in all great value for this part of Cape Town.

Everything is perfect with this one so not much more to say. The only con is that if you are looking for a party hostel meeting lots of people, maybe not the spot. Otherwise you can't go wrong with this one. Lots of space, chilled, very clean and good facilities!

Had an absolutely wonderful time here! Met some really lovely people, staff are super nice, clean and quite, short walk from centre and near some good restaurants. The place is clean, and has all the amenities. The only thing I will say is they have replaced the aircon with fans so the rooms can get a bit stuffy on a hot night.

Like my title says, I would rather call it a backpackers than a lodge. The truth is probably somewhere inbetween. All in all I can really recommend this place in Cape Town for the following reasons:
+ increadibly friendly and helpfull staff who really seem to like their job
+ amazing view on Table Mountain from their balcony
+ MyCiti Bus stop is just around the corner (1 min walking)
+ Checkers and Woolworths are also in walking distance
+ Dorms look beautiful, have big lockers (bring own lock) and beds are probably among the best one's I had on this continent.
+ Kitchen is super well equipped and their kifes actually cut things easily
+ Basic breakfast included (toast, jam, peanut butter, milk, coffee, cornflakes, bran flakes)
+ It is quiet at night
+ Very nice other guests (became friends with a couple of people)
+ If you want to go out, bars and great restaurants are in walking distance (if you want to eat Game, ask them for "Arnold's" vouchers, so you will also get a free bottle of wine there)
+ Beautiful small garden
+ Well working free Wifi
+ They recycle (could be mentioned a little more obvious at check-in)
+ Early check-ins are possible (from 7 or 8 on)

As I also like to give feedback of how places could improve, I also want to do it here, but the criticism is definitely minimal:
- I think the floors in the community bathrooms could be cleaned more often or thoroughly.
- Breakfast could include a little more like fruits.
- THAT'S IT!

Rates from R180 in 6 sleeper dorm (at least in main season 2015/16)

Room Tip: The dorms are perfectly alright and have very comfy beds
