We have recently returned from an eighteen day golf tour of South Africa, being part of a group of 42 golfers from Australia and New Zealand. Travelling along the very scenic Garden Route from Cape Town on our second last leg, we arrived in George and were booked into the Oakhurst Manor House Hotel.
Because of the size of our group, we were half expecting check-in problems that we had experienced at some other hotels. The Oakhurst was a pleasant surprise. Even though it is a small hotel with a smallish Reception area, there were no problems with the friendly owner and her staff on hand to hand out keys and direct us to our rooms. After a long day on the road this was a nice way to quickly get settled and unpack.
I guess the Oakhurst could best be described as a cosy and comfy country style, charming two-story hotel with thatched roof and just 25 rooms. Our room was not large but well-appointed, air-conditioned, very clean with a nice country feel and furnishings, en-suite bathroom including bath plus all the usual stuff (telephone, TV, Tea and coffee making facilities, etc.) and as a surprise, a small loft lounge area.
The downstairs area of the hotel featured vaulted ceilings, original oil paintings scattered here and there, restaurant and a large lounge area - just what our group needed to watch the Rugby Union Test match between Australia and South Africa. There was a very large fireplace in the lounge area although it was not crackling during our stay – the weather was quite warm.
We enjoyed a great buffet dinner, however we were told the restaurant is not usually open for dinner at night, (only breakfast and lunch) although they do cater for large special travel groups like ours from time to time. (Apparently local restaurants are only a short stroll away).
Breakfast was a delightful buffet too with a full-on English style breakfast if required. Cereal, fruit, juice, eggs, toast and coffee was all we needed to get us going.
We found all the staff to be extremely friendly and helpful – nothing seemed to be a problem even though Australia won the Rugby Union Test Match. Just kidding.
We will have fond memories of the Oakhurst even though we were only there for one night - highly recommended if you are ever down that way.
