Owner description: Visit Pledge Nature Reserve in the heart of Knysna to view indigenous plants to the area and some history. Before Knysna was officially named a town, it was made up of small settlements, one of which was Newhaven, just east of today’s Long Street – the lo g straight roadthat bisects the town and runs down to Thesen Island.

A ideal walk for those wishing to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. A short easy walk among beautiful Protea flowers and sceneries.

It doesn't take long to walk every path in this nature reserve but it's worth it. There are lots of pretty plants. It's a great walk and the view at the top is really nice.

It could be a really nice was but I found it to have so many small problems that I couldn't fully enjoy it. Some of the signs have been pulled out. The colours on the feet marking the paths do not correspond with the ones on the map. Also, Urban DVD has closed so the notice at the entrance which says you can buy tickets there needs to be changed. The exit mechanism isn't very clever either. Just the small things could make it so much better.

When I arrived in Knysna I was disappointed to find my hostel was too far from the forest and famous national parks to get there without my own transport. Discovering the Pledge Nature Reserve right near Main Road was exactly what I needed. It's easy to get to - behind Pledge Square - and get your tickets (R20 adults, R10 children) from the tourism office, Polvo Coffee or the music store there.

At the entrance to the park, you get buzzed in by pressing the button and reading out your ticket number. You can buy a map and info booklet at the entrance for R10, which might be worth doing if you're in a rush and want to make sure you follow the right paths down. I followed the trail on the right side up to the viewing point (which is very lovely) and then wandered back down taking random paths. I spent a couple of hours there, reading by the streams and ponds, but you could be in and out within 45 minutes.

The walks are easy and covered by trees, and I had the whole place to myself - as other reviewers have pointed out, it seems surprisingly devoid of tourists. It's not a "must see" in Knysna - you're not missing something by not going - but it's a pleasant way to spend some time if you want to get away in nature and the view from the viewpoint is definitely worth it.

What a pleasurable little hike on this little paradise right in the middle of the town. With the easy trails, not much effort to climb to the top where one is treated to a breath-taking view of the Knysna Heads and the Leisure and Thesen Islands. The most beautiful part for me is examining closely the abundant variety of flowering bushes. Can’t get enough photos of them! Flowers were in bloom this September when we visited and one cannot help but marvel at God’s wisdom in seeing all these wonderful floral colour explosions. Birds were also happily chirping away. We finished the hike in 1 ½ hours because we tool lots of photos. At the very top of the hill is a place to rest or have a picnic. Just one table though. But not many people come to this place, and although there is a small entrance fee, it is more than worth it.
