“Stunning Petroglyphs - Short Ride From Sedona”

V Bar V Heritage Site
Ranked #1 of 8 things to do in Rimrock
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 2 weeks ago

The V Bar V Ranch has, on it's property, some of the most stunning, well preserved petroglyphs that I've ever seen. The docent did a fantastic job of explaining their history, and meaning (though much of it is still a mystery). The site has a recently discovered solar calendar, and what appear to be maps of the local area.

Highly recommended for anyone interested in Native American culture and history. This site is a short drive from Sedona (maybe half an hour), will require about an hour or hour and a half to see, and can easily be combined with a trip to Montezuma's Castle and Montezuma's Well. Once you've paid for entrance to one of these, the others can be seen on the same ticket!

Since this site required crossing through a private ranch until the Park Service was able to obtain it in 1995, the petroglyphs are virtually untouched (except for one errant cowboy’s initials from the 1930’s!) The park ranger who explained the calendar was very knowledgeable and we were further enlightened by the unexpected appearance of a leading archaeologist from the University of Arizona who happened to be visiting that day. This site is a must-see for anyone interested in ancient Native American rock art and culture.

Go here! This is absolutely worth the trip. You need to walk maybe 0.25 mile out to see the petroglyphs, but they are absolutely amazing.

This was my second time at V-Bar-V Heritage Site. This visit was much better than the first one (5 years ago). The docent was fabulous. His hour long presentation included explanations of the petroglyphs as well as the calendar. Great visual aids as well.

The V Bar V is very close to Sedona and home to some great panels of largely undisturbed pictographs. While most were done by the ancient Sinagua natives some may actually predate them. Jim Wilson one of the staff docents did a great good with explaining the display
