We came here as a family of four with two young kids. Great views, accessible hikes well suited for kids, all in all a great and enjoyable experience

An awesome sight. The gash in the earth where the plates come apart. In common with many Icelandic beauty spots, the coach tours come here, but the people only walk a hundred yards to the first photo opportunity. Power through and you get a bit of peace.

Cleft in the earth over 4 km length for Walking and Sightseeing (Allmannanaga) with waterfall and impressive basalt columns. Place of foundation of the 1st parliament in Europe (Thing). Possibility of diving in the clift water. Best place for parking: down in the National park.

Amazing views throughout. You could spend days here and still not see it all. Be careful about hiring a car to see the park as some have insurance excesses which mean you might not be able to drive to all the places you want to see without risking a huge penalty when you get back. We went on a guided tour which was good but there were a lot of places where I would of stopped if I was on my own so each has it's merits and issues but which ever way you do go you must see it. When we visited you still had some snow around so had a contrast between the snow mountains and the greener areas.

We went through Thingvellir as part the last full day of a south Iceland photography workshop. The terrain is amazing with wide vistas, geological formations including the fault line between the American and Europe tectonic plates, a massive lake, and waterfalls. Admission and parking was free.
