Great Wooston Farm Bed & Breakfast
Reviewed 17 July 2013

We have just returned from spending 4 nights at this beautiful farmhouse and wish we could have stayed longer, but will definately return, firstly the rooms are spotlessly clean, we had a four poster bed which was very comfortable all with matching linen, our towels were changed daily, there was biscuits left for us and tea and coffee facilities in our rom also a wide screen television and ensuite facilities,on our arrival mary made us feel so very welcome, she made us tea and coffee and toasted tea cakes, the breakfasts were huge and delicous, and mary was always happy to provide anything different that we requested, there was a lovely lounge for guests with books and board games if required, there is a lovely large garden with a seated area and when we returned of an evening we sat out there and enjoyed the surroundings and the traquility,so in all a very highly recommended B&B, which we could not fault at all,it is well situated for all that devon has to offer, we are well travelled and have stayed in many types of accomodation but this one beats them all,so thank you to mary and john for a very very enjoyable break, and as i said previously we cannot wait to return.

Room Tip: every room has a fabulous view over the countryside

I stayed at Great Wooston Farm a few years ago and found it to be one of the best B&B's I have ever stayed in. It was like staying in your own country farmhouse homely, welcoming and you wouldn't find a better cooked breakfast with fresh produce used. The views are fantastic and it is so peaceful, sheer bliss. I suggest that if anyone doesn't like natural farmhouse smells they stay in a 'big city' and smell exhaust fumes!. If we're down in that neck of woods again I would definitely stay at Great Wooston Farm.

We have just had another great stay with Mary and John at their lovely working farm B&B. Mary always welcomes guests with warmth (and tea and buns!) Quiet, peaceful, comfortable and simply delicious breakfasts with a good choice of fruit, cereals, yoghurt etc. Mary's always obliging and will do something different if you choose. We stayed at a time when John had brought all the cattle in for testing - a stressfull time for farmers, but John was full of good humour and would always answer our questions regarding his cattle and farm. It's a great place to stay and explore a lovely part of Devon, can't wait to go back! Thank you Mary & John (and Flossy the dog!)

Yet again we have spent a wonderful time here at Gt.Wooston Farm. Mary is more than friendly and the Farm House is very typical of a Working Farm. I am appalled to read a comment that two Australian people had written about this B & B . I can assure anyone who is thinking about visiting, that anything they claim is certainly untrue. It's well worth a visit for its peaceful surroundings ,cleanliness and friendliness of Mary and John.

We arrived in the pouring rain at the time we advised we would. We then stood outside in that pouring rain at the front door knocking and knocking for approximately 3 mins. No response. I then tried the door which did open and we proceeded into an entry area with another door. Again, we knocked on the door. We could hear a very loud television on inside the house. We continued to knock on the door - and then began calling out for another few minutes until finally, the door opened. No apology when the door was finally opened. (This lack of welcome has not EVER been my experience with staying in a b and b - I am usually warmly welcomed at the door).

From the moment I opened the initial front door there was a very musty smell eminating from within the house. Once the door was opened by the owner, the smell got much stronger. To my nose, the smell was a mixture of old smoke and closed-up, musty house. It was awful.

We were shown our rooms. They appeared like they did in the pictures we had viewed prior to booking. The presentation appeared clean however, the quality of the furnishings were very average. The towels, sheets etc were very average, bordering on unacceptable. This "average-ness" was NOT reflected in the price charged - $70 pounds for a double room for the night.

The smell was not acceptable. I couldn't open the window in my bedroom fast enough - although it was pouring rain and blowing into the room - I needed fresh air and a reprieve from the smell inside the house.

Needless to say, we left the house and did NOT stay the night. I simply could not stay in the house, with that smell. It was not acceptable.

The amount charged for that b and b is NOT commensurate with the fittings, furnishings and environment of the house.

I cannot recommend this accommodation. I cannot comment on the breakfast that comes as part of the accommodation because I refused to stay the night.

Find somewhere else to stay in Mortonhampstead - there are some truly beautiful places. We continued to stay in the area for 4 days - we just did not stay at the Great Wooston Farm Bed and Breakfast and would not recommend you do.

Mary C, Owner at Great Wooston Farm Bed & Breakfast, responded to this reviewResponded 4 June 2013

In reply to this very unfavourable review of Great Wooston Farm recently. It is very disappointing to hear such harsh and wholly unfounded criticism of our establishment. We could ignore this review or attempt to somehow gloss over it, or say sorry a million times, but considering the nature and content of it, and having sought advice on how to deal with such a review it is best dealt with by outlining the facts and exposing the fragility of the quotes and accusations made.

We would like to say although unfortunately we cannot see through walls we do have a novel device called a door bell which comes right through to the kitchen and is in full working order. We pride ourselves on having an in house protocol upon when it rings we answer the front door, this has worked extremely well for the past 35 years for all guests apart from these. We had not considered someone would stand in the pouring rain and not ring it!

As for the musky smell it was very noticeable when they walked in and as if by magic it disappeared as soon as they did, need I say more. As for the smoke smell this has been a smoking free house for at least the past 50 years, cigarette smoke is noticeably different to the smoke from a log burner, most people would know that.

They were greeted with a warm and courteous welcome, and then offered tea or coffee and cakes which were declined as they were going into town to get an evening meal, this did not appear unusual at this time of day as they were off out for a meal shortly. I did lend them a local map of Dartmoor as they were booked in for three nights and were looking to explore the area.

With regards to the furniture, fittings, bedding and towels - in 35 years of doing B&B I have never had a complaint, as to the “average-ness” of these facilities, maybe expensive handmade solid wood furniture and quality M&S linen is not what they are used to back home.

At about 7pm the phone rang, it was one of the two guests, they said they were not coming back, when asked why - the lady refused to say, very bizarre and unusual behaviour, they were here for a very short period of time and have for whatever reason in that hour or so - only known to them have seen something that no one else has experienced in 35 years of B&B.

If you could find accommodation with this scenery and views out of your bedroom window then you definitely would not be in a Premier Inn or paying their prices! They could have booked a twin room to share for half the price, they booked two double rooms on-line (so I could not suggest they had a twin room instead), this is their oversight.

We are genuinely concerned that these guests have had what they considered a bad experience and for that we are sorry they feel this way. If we could understand any of their comments having any merit or foundation then we would gladly accept the comments and criticism with open arms and welcome the opportunity to put it right. However with many hundreds of positive reviews and feedback over the years from our thousands of guests, and our own experiences of staying in many B&B’s and hotels over the years, knowing full well what standards are acceptable and being aware that are own standards are right up there with the best establishments, it is with this knowledge to hand that we can draw no other conclusion but to totally discredit their unfounded and inaccurate review of our home as nothing more than a troubled young lady who in her defence may well have just been having a bad day!

We have to accept that unfortunately some people are beyond pleasing, If we only get one person with such views and opinions of this nature in 35 years then we are probably doing a lot of things right and should therefore be proud of the quality service that we genuinely provide.
