Owner description: A hike to the summit of this 400m volcano offers panoramic views of the island's solitude in the South Pacific.

Don't drive up there, take a hike from Hanga Roa, it's not that long and the views are amazing! Once you get to the crster be sure to walk all the way to the left where it breaks, the view is breathtaking. My favorite place on the island along Tongariki!

climbed the crater up from the other side, took us about 2 hours to reach the crater rim itself, then walked around the entire crater. Phantastic. Absolute worth visiting.

If you don´t want to climb it all up, drive up and start walking around the crater.

Our tour took us to Rano Kau shortly after checking into our hotel, and it proved to be a superb introduction to the beauty of the island. It is one of the three volcanoes that formed the island, and you quickly got the feeling that you were somewhere far away from the rest of the world.

This crater is surprisingly beautiful, and well worth the hike to get there! You can drive or take a tour, but we chose to hike. We recommend making time to visit.

Hikers and trailrunners paradise -- guided tour isn't necessary!  My wife and I spent 5 days on Rapanui and had a fantastic time there to check off another bucket list adventure.  We stayed at the Puku Vai Hotel and hiked from there to Orongo Rano Kau volcano.  On the way, a local dog must have known we were hiking to Orongo and guided us all the way to the entrance of the volcano.  We chose to hike to the left of the volcano first and then hike back to the other side where the tourists were bused to the sacred ceremonial grounds/village.  We're glad we went to the left hand side of the volcano since there were views of the island, volcano, birds, and other wildlife that one couldn't see from the other side.  The trail was easy and we didn't see anyone else on the trail.  It is impossible to hike around the volcano due to the lack of access/trail.  The views of the volcano and see coast were amazing.  The purity ecosystem in the volcano is a remarkable sight!!  The 5-hour hike back to our hotel was definitely worth every step.  A guided tour of Orongo isn't needed unless you're time constrained...
