We stayed at Duviara for three nights in January 2010. It is owned by Paul Vuhu, a well known academic in Vanuatu, and operated by his sister Emina. The Guesthouse is located high up in the cloudforest of Ambae, and close to the best track on Ambae for climbing Mount Lombenben.
The facilities are basic, there is no electricity or plumbing, but what you get here is an experience of genuine village life and the feeling of belonging to a close knit ni-Vanuatu family.
Activities include climbing to any of the three crater lakes on Mount Lombenben, as well as bush walks, swimming in the swimming hole, and joining in with daily activities such as gardening and cooking. We got to make traditional laplap and other dishes with Emina, and also had the best (and strongest) kava of our lives here!
Note that Duviara is not accessible by vehicle, it is approximiately half a kilometer from the end of the road at the village of Ambanga, where trucks drop you off and pick you up.
We would recommend Duviara for anyone not afraid of becoming part of the fabric of everyday village life, going to church, heading the nakamal in the evenings, and learning about how people in Vanuatu REALLY live. We felt more welcome here than at any other part of our holiday around Vanuatu.
