After staying in Wisma Monica (which is a horrible place.. Dont follow Lonely Planet recommendation!) we ended up here. The welcome was lovely with a fresh fruit juice (and we got a new one for free every next day). The lady was very helpful with arranging transport, a scooter, a guide and other questions.

The rooms are basic, but the bed is really good and the hot shower is nice (just ask the staff to turn on the hot water). It is true, the food is overpriced and portions are small, but here is the big tip!

Behind the church next to Pias is an excellent coffeeshop where they also serve breakfast/lunch. The coffee is the best we had in 3 months of travelling in Indonesia. The coffeeshop is called Kaana. Just go there for breakfast with excellent coffee.

On the main road, 50m to the right (coming from Poppies) there is also a lovely coffeeshop with great coffee where they also serve very tasty local food (I forgot the name, but it was something with coffee).

Guides recommended for trekkings and funerals are Erwin (he has an office on the main road directly on the left) and Aru.. Both very friendly and funny.

Would really recommend the place.. Especially if you are planning on travelling onwards to Ampana for the Togians, since there are many people to meet at Poppies who you can share a car with (15 hour drive with overnight stay in Tentena).

The addition of a rather ugly extension tripled the number of rooms and destroyed the original idiosyncratic character of the place (not mentioned in Lonely Planet). Staff were unable to cope with the large number of guests and the service was dismal. If this doesn't bother you, the place is still very good value for money.

Basic clean rooms looking out over a garden for just 200K rupiah. Very much choice for breakfast (not included) and good traditional food at night. But the true quality of this place is that so many people gather here and give it a true traveller's atmosphere.
We truely loved Toraja. Its beautifull surroundings, its unique culture, its funeral ceremonies and graves in all kinds and its very lovely people. Rantepao is a friendly city (visit JAK Koffie!).

Excellent food. We had the traditional pa'piong, both a chicken and pork one. Delicious. Very filling (chicken for 2 and pork for 1). Comes with white and black rice and veg. Between 3 of us we couldn't eat it all.
They bring the bamboo tubes to the table and tip the food out in front of your eyes. Definitely worth having at least once in tana toraja. Chicken was my favourite, very aromatic flavour. Worth the money (80,000 for one 110,000 for 2).
Service was slow but the food makes up for it.
They need at least 2 hours to prepare the pa'piong, we dropped in late morning. Restaurant was fully booked when we arrived, book ahead. We sat outside, not too cold. Nice atmosphere.

My boyfriend and I ended up staying at Pias Poppies for 5 nights because we enjoyed it very much.
The owners and staff were all very friendly and helpful - when my boyfriend was ill they gave us directions to the only doctor that was open at that time of the day.
Once a day they handed out free juices or small snacks, they also let us try some local delicacies.
The bed was really comfy, just the roosters were a bit bothersome in the early morning. Apart from that it was very quiet. Motorbike rental available.
Great value for money!
