Was there during my birdwatching tour around Thailand. With a Chiang Saen lake as perfect view and best spot for birdwatching too. The place is in beautiful surroundings and the rooms are gorgeous with nice amenities, comfortable bed, friendly and informative staff and incredible foods. Highly recommend this place to all eco-friendly thinking traveler. Thanks a lot to Ian and Vassana (for the special deal), hope to see you again if you both travel to Indonesia (or Bali) and apologies for my delay in reviewing.

Had a lovely stay at Viang Yonok for two nights...I really wanted to stay longer! The place is in beautiful surroundings and the rooms are gorgeous, it couldnt have been better. The owners and staff were the best, really made me feel welcome and made it a fantastic stay, they really go out of their way for their guests. The owners and their staff were a delight, including their very friendly driver Chai. Really enjoyed their company and the peaceful retreat they have created near to Chiang Saen. Highly recommend walking down the boardwalk and also using the bikes provided. I definitely want to return sometime in the future. Many thanks Ian and Vassana and apologies for delay in reviewing!

Just taking a walk around the Viang Yonok and seeing all the care that has gone into every little detail and you start to realize how much passion and love Ian and Vassana (the owners) have for the little oasis they have built across from beautiful Chiang Saen Lake. Of the more than two dozen places I have stayed in in southeast Asia, this place is easily my favorite.

The grounds are beautiful, and the small but elegant pool is excellent for cooling off at the end of a hot day. The beds are easily the most comfortable I found anywhere in Asia. The food was authentic Thai and the best I had in Thailand. The bathrooms were beautiful and clean.

This is not a five star resort, its a small family run hotel so don't expect the over the top colder luxury of a steel and glass tower. This is a place where everything about it welcomes you the minute you arrive. If you can't relax here, you won't be able to relax anywhere. Vassana and Ian took great care in building this place to make it eco-friendly and part of the community, rather than a place away from it. It is an incredibly peaceful place that just fits.

While the bungalos are beautiful and the open air restaurant the perfect place to hang out for dinner and a drink, what really makes this place special are the people that run it. Ian and Vassana are the owners, Daeng the manager, and Mum the cook (Vassana's mother...and the food is incredible) all take a personal interest in making sure your stay is the best. You will never meet a nicer and more genuine group of people. They treat you like family. You'll leave feeling like you have known them for much longer than your stay. They are also happy to arrange local forays for you, we chose to go ride some dirtbikes until we traded those rides in for some rides on elephants, both incredible experiences. Like many people, we stayed a day longer than originally planned...just couldn't bear to leave. You'll feel the same. If you make reservations to go to another hotel after this one, make sure they have a flexible policy on changes or cancelations, you might just end up a little longer than you planned!

We had a really lovely two week break at the hotel. Staff and owners were very friendly and helpfull as we had our wedding and honeymoon there, they arranged everything and much more for us. The hotel is very nice and and the location is great, very peaceful and idyllic. The hotel is more than 5star, paradise in our opinion. We would like to thank everyone at Viang Yonok for such a fantastic time.

Room Tip: All rooms are a great standard

I've stayed at Viang Yonok twice now. The first time I was there for 2 weeks putting the finishing touches to a live video project and again recently as a base for a tour into Laos.
Ian and Vassana are wonderful hosts, nothing is too much trouble and there is always time for a chat about yesterday's day out or future plans. They really are genuinely interested in their guests and treat them as friends. Ian is especially good at suggesting excursions in the local area and has extensive knowledge and first hand experience of 'off the beaten track' places. Vassana is always ready to share a joke and laughter rings round VY everyday.
The facilities are superb, the location is next to a lake and ideal for bird watchers or those who just wish to chill out by the pool. If you like 2 wheeled transport, Ian is a classic bike nut with a collection that he needs no excuse to talk about or show off - He's not too shabby on a mountain bike either and will gladly take guests on guided rides.
Of course, the food is second-to-none in their restaurant, all prepared by family and their close knit staff.
All in all a superb venue, not likely to be overrun by backpackers, and you're as likely to meet Thai people staying as you are to meet Farangs (Foreigners) which is a sure sign of a great establishment.
I cannot recommend VY highly enough and I intend to visit again next year!

Room Tip: All rooms are superb although on one side of the garden they overlook the lake which is very nice
