I stayed at swell for a week with a friend. Some things about it were exceptional and others were poor. The breakfasts and dinners were amazing! The kitchen, grounds, office (Haoudy), and security staff are all very friendly. Our room was large, comfortable, and very clean. The internet worked well for my friend doing online class. The pool was also very nice. However, I didn't find the surfing instructors to be very good since they were often hung over and tired. One day one of them didn't get into the water and just yelled at us from the beach. Another day one of them was at least a half an hour late to the beach and hung over. In the mean time I got completely smashed in the water and lost tons of confidence. He later told me, “I’m sorry I should have been there.” As a sports instructor for a living I would not have a job if I were like this. Clare was in another country and doesn’t know what is always going on. They were also unenthusiastic about doing the theory lessons. Our second theory lesson he wanted to do on the day we were leaving. How would that help as we would not have time to put any of it to practice? Yes it is true we were busy doing other activities in the evening, but we had to keep asking when we would do it and it got cancelled twice because he was “tired.” In the end my confidence with surfing got crushed and I am now more nervous than ever in the water. The instructors would probably say something like, “She was a nervous surfer anyway,” but on the first day I was fiercely battling the white wash and wasn’t able to make it out, but I wasn’t scared. That came later. One good thing about the surf instructors is that (I think) they are all lifegurards. During the lesson they always surf on big foamy boards so they can paddle quickly to you if needed. One time when I got trashed during a lesson (when the instructors were actually there and in the water), when I surfaced there was immediately someone there to see if I was okay. In another recent review my friend got in trouble for surfing where she wasn’t supposed to. I was actually standing on the beach watching her with a swell coach. Another instructor came up and said, “Does she know she isn’t supposed to be surfing there?” The other coach replied, “I don’t know but she is handling it just fine.” Clare claims she was being unsafe which is completely a lie. I didn’t go out there because it wasn’t my ability. Lastly our package was supposed to include airport transfers. We only got one when we left and had to pay for a taxi for the other. I will not return to swell.
