Sofitel Krabi Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort
Ranked #6 of 12 Hotels in Nong Thale
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 19 March 2013

We really enjoyed our 9 nights at the Krabi Sofitel, particularly appreciating the quiet out-of-town location, the well manicured gardens, the ever-smiling staff, the excellent decorative order, the vast choice at breakfast, and, of course, the huge pool. The swimming pool is indeed remarkable, a long tiled lake, uniformly 1.3 – 1.4 metres deep, curving along most of the frontage of the resort, then turning alongside one wing of the hotel to give the occupants of the ground floor rooms on that side direct access to a private swimming area from their bedroom terraces.

We booked through Sawadee.com, who had an early booking offer (> a fortnight in advance) - subsequently also seen on the hotel’s website - which gave us a Luxury room for the price of a Superior one. The ground floor room was very spacious, had a 2 metre-wide double bed, and was only a few steps away from the pool over the lawn. The airco was silent and only one night was disturbed by a mosquito. Sawadee.com also gave us the services of their local agent Krabi Spesialisten, a Norwegian-run operation who provided airport transfer, the services of a rep with good advice on where to eat in Ao Nang, and who operate by far the most memorable experience of our stay, a leisurely all-day cruise around the Phi-Phi Islands , constantly plied with food and drink, in an old Indonesian sailing boat. Highly recommended. The hotel also offers its own extensive range of outings and activities, and an infrequent shuttle service to Ao Nang.

We arrived before normal check-in time, but were shown to our room immediately.

If there was an irritation during our stay it lay along the poolside. Twice we arrived at the pool relatively late in the morning to find no towels, no attendant and seemingly every sun lounger taken. Reception quickly resolved the towels issue, and we eventually found a few remaining loungers, on the lawn away from the poolside or beside the whine of the pool’s pumping station. The hotel claims to have 300 sun loungers, but I counted only 150, and with 276 rooms and potentially twice that number of guests, there may be a structural problem. The more so, if, reading their comments on Trip Advisor, some of the loungers are occupied by people who have sneaked in from the Krabi Sands Resort up the road. Perhaps to be fair, it should be said that at that point the pool attendant’s stock-in-trade was being drenched by a downpour every afternoon.

The hotel has four restaurants, but in the evening the breakfast room is shut and the Pool Bar is open only twice a week for a barbecue or buffet, so if you want to eat in the hotel, the choice is between their Italian and Thai/Indian restaurants. It is thus difficult to find a light snack at night. Both restaurants have outside tables on a balcony overlooking the gardens and the sea, but capacity is limited, and we found ourselves eating inside in the Thai restaurant, where the airco was not particularly effective, a hot and sticky experience. The choice at breakfast is amazing, well topped-up, with a fried egg and an omelette station, so no waiting, but why were the tables variously devoid of serviettes, teaspoons and milk, and the itinerant coffee pot never there when you needed it?
The Saturday night buffet at the Pool Bar came with entertainment. Despite early booking and being amongst the first on the scene, repeated requests for a poolside table were refused, and we were shown to a table at the back beside the loudspeakers for the music, whilst a table for six at the poolside went unoccupied all evening. Not crossed the right palm with silver? Fortunately the singer had a nice voice, we liked her repertoire and she stopped early enough to have put nobody off their sleep.
The hotel has no ATM. The nearest one is a short walk away at the Beach House Restaurant, but was not working when we got to it, necessitating a longer walk or short taxi ride to the facilities outside the Sheraton.
The resort has a few loungers on the public beach across the road, and there is a cordoned-off area for swimming in the sea, but the beach is more attractive for a quiet walk at sunset than for swimming, particularly at low tide. A continuous stream of articulated lorries glides past the hotel, but causes little disturbance.
The Sofitel is part of a French chain, and the senior management is no doubt francophone, but the first foreign language of the local staff is English. There is, however, a copy of Le Figaro at breakfast.
We would have loved to have stayed longer, but this level of service and facilities has its price.

As a Platinum Accor member, I decided to book this hotel as I was going with my wife on our first anniversary for 4 nights. The reviews on TripAdvisor were mixed but in the end I decided to book it anyways for the platinum benefits.

When we arrived, we received a welcome cake and fruit basket which was great. The staff were always very friendly and helpful. The issues with the hotel can be summarised as follows:

- Not enough staff around the amazing pool to allow guest to order drinks/food (we only got complimentaty fruit sticks for one day!)
- Rooms are in need of renovation and are not fitting for a 5 star resort
- As hotel is a bit far from the town centre, it was a big let down to hear that the shuttle bus is not complimentary, especially with the high room rates. Moreover, the frequency of the shuttle bus was not good.
- Limited channels in TV and they did not have any premium Movies/Sports channels
- While the Spa is great, I had an unpleasant experience in one occasion where I was bitten 10 times on my hand as I was doing a massage. I was very annoyed with this and it is the last thing you expect while you are having a relaxing massage. The masseuse was considerate and brought some mosquito smoke which sent it away but the smell was not very pleasant for the remaining time. The hotel gave us a 50% discount as a good gesture and the manager accepted that it was not acceptable but it should not happen in a 5 star resort that is charging many times more for the same massage that can be obtained outside.

I had twisted my ankle and the hotel kindly provided a complimentary car to take me to medical centre and back.

The hotel is good but if those minor things can be resolved, it will be a great one.

I spent 3 nights at Sofitel Krabi Phokeethra on the occasion of Valentine's day.
I can highly recommend Sofitel Krabi Phokeethra for several reasons:

- Breakfast buffet is perfect. Big selection and tasty food.

- The Italian Restaurant is excellent, the menu is sophisticated and the food is outstanding, price/value in good balance.

- The pool is beautiful. It's the largest pool in Thailand and it comes with a nice pool bar.

- The SPA is awesome, great packages and very nice rooms.

- Staff is very friendly and very attentive.

- It's only minutes away from the beach and the hotel has it's own speed boats in case you want to make a trip.

I requested some special arrangements on the occasion of Valentine's day and the hotel staff exceeded all my expectations by far. They have put a lot of attention in every detail.

Stayed there 2 times already now and i will stay there again.

We went there in the month of March 2013. Overall a very nice resort. has lots of activities. Suggestion for tourists planning to book at the resort is to keep one day specifically to enjoy the activities which the resort offers.

I have just returned from a 4 night stay at the Sofitel in Krabi, Thailand. Beautiful Colonial style hotel with amazing rooms, pool and facilities. Downside this hotel charges its guests for shuttle services to Ao Nang town and the beach. I would expect a luxury hotel to provide this for free. The cost of eating in the hotel I found to be very over priced. Hotel staff lied to us when we asked for the location of the nearest mini mart. A hotel guest over heard and told us it was 5mins from the hotel. The hotel did not provide free WiFi and instead were charging guests. Day trips to the Phi Phi islands were overpriced VIA the hotel and so many guests were booking these trips with local travel agents directly. Whilst this is a beautiful hotel I felt the service was poor.

Rest assured that it is always a pleasure to receive constructive feedback, which allows us to achieve and improve our best quality service at all times.

We sincerely regret to hear about your disappointment regarding our beach. In Thailand, all beaches are public but we have managed to secure an area for the resort. We make sure that our Sport & Recreations team takes necessary measures on a daily basis to offer our guests a decent and comfortable beach.

In regard to your legitimate observation about our internet facilities, note that we are currently on process of reviewing the service offered, which should be completed in the near future.

We have also taken good note of your comments on the prices for our activities and restaurants. I am sure you will understand and appreciate the fact that we apply rates in line with other 5 star properties and also equivalent to the quality of service rendered.

At Sofitel, we strive to provide our guests with the highest of standards in quality and service by, not only meeting but also exceeding their expectations; therefore your feedback is once again very important to us.

We do appreciate your concerns and comments, and shall be looking forward for opportunity to welcome you back in Krabi again.
