Nice hotel, great people!

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 24 Sept 2015
We have rented two bungalows here for a few days and came to absolutely love the place.

We have been in touch with their team via email and organized a pick-up from the airport in advance. On our arrival it was pouring rain and soon we have learned that it has been that way for the previous 3 days.

The owner Sam and the French girl (whose name I have since forgotten, sorry!) were very hospitable and arranged a nice dinner for us that evening. Luckily for us the weather turned sunny from the next day and we had the pleasure of enjoying our breakfast in sunshine on the terrace that belongs to the main house. The ladies cooking for us were always lovely and taught us a few words in Indonesian and Sam was always helpful. He arranged scooters for us from a guy in town and even took us for a drive to show us the coastal area and explained about what happened here nearly ten years prior when the tsunami hit.

All in all we have absolutely loved the resort and the small eateries/foot stalls in the vicinity. If we ever visit Banda Aceh again we will stay here again for sure.

The local beaches weren't too nice as the river that runs by the main house of the resort brought a lot of driftwood and some rubbish with it after the heavy rains but we met a few very hospitable locals there too.

One note about the area though, ladies must cover their head, arms and wear long skirts or trousers as sharia law is exercised here and some locals will go as far as harassing you if you don't comply.

The resort is located on the riverside, a bit away from the seaside, just next to the road. Besides the (moderate) traffic noise and the wake up songs from the loudspeaker of a neighboring military station at 6.30am (which i preferred to the usual muhecin's praying), this surrounding is in absolute peace and nature. The bungalows are authentic, if you're the nature type, this is it.
The cooking is very local style, with a pre-set weekly menu plan with a very few European style cookings. Delicious fruit juices.

A really nice experience. Even if you don't go for kite surfing but just to learn something of the area, it's a great place to stay. I loved swimming in the river, playing with the puppies, cruising around on my scooter and talking to the locals, visiting the stunning beaches, walking about the grounds of the resort and looking at all the trees and flowers. The owner Sam is truly congenial and a person who loves meeting and talking to guests, the host Alice is so warm and welcoming, it's a pleasure to know them. The kitchen and cleaning staff are all such lovely people too.
Oh, the food. It's rather expensive for people who are accustomed to travelling in Indonesia and eating local food, but they don't mind if you don't have the budget to eat in the restaurant there. But if you can afford it, the food is excellent. The breakfast is included in the price, and the French toast - delicious!
Extra note - the wifi wasn't working for a few days because of a technical problem, and the owner was kind enough to lend me his 3G iPad until it was fixed. Definitely service above and beyond!

Room tip: They're all good.

Owner Sam is incredibly friendly and helpful, being a local he knows exactly what's going on and can help with any question or issue. It was my boyfriends birthday and he went out of his way to get a birthday cake and made sure there were plenty of birthday beers in stock! He also knows all the timings etc for ferries and will help you plan your stay. Accommodation is clean and smart, the food is awesome and the portions are huge! The staff are brilliant, very welcoming. It's also the home of Aceh kitecamp run by Regis who is an awesome instructor. As beginners he was very thorough and worked at our level and pace, safety is priority and I felt very comfortable even when conditions were not great (but they're nearly always perfect!). He hires out gear as well as private and group lessons http://www.aceh-kitecamp.com/ you can also hire a scooter to zip around the area. One tip for the ladies, stay covered up outside of the resort as its a very religious area.

what a lovely Oasis Sam and his team have created. On a huge piece of land, he has built a simple and very attractive resort.we stayed in a bungalow at the far end of the property with AC in the double bedroom, small kitchen, partly outdoor bathroom, sitting room and private terrace with hammock for four nights. The wind was there most days and we also kayaked the river. On a motorbike we explored gorgeous beaches and coastal road. The trip was a surprise from my husband for my Birthday and a wonderful gift it was. Alice and her team excelled in the management and kitchen and Regis is experienced and professional at the watwersport centre.

Room tip: The new rooms are away from the army camp and the river with beautiful mountain views
