As soon as we arrived at Matsushima,my friend found this Kanran-tei. We entered the entrance, we were surprised to see great scenery. We enjoyed the view over green tea.We can enjoy great view ,comfortable wind from sea and greentea at a time there.

Whilst this may be a very old tea house there is nothing to it except a nice view. The museum attached has 2 or 3 worthwhile exhibits but no descriptions. It needs developing and some English descriptions.

I had a magical Autumn Visit to Matsushima, famous for its bay with its pine tree laden islands and its ranking as one of Japan's three most scenic views.

I was fortunate that the visit included a Tea Ceremony in the Kanrantei. The Kanrentai is a Momoyama style tea house originally built in Kyoto by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who gave it to Date Masamune for his service.

The sunset and dawn views across Matsushima Bay are particularly beautiful- a wonderful contrast and break with metropolitan life.

We stayed overnight in Matsushima May 2006.
Kanrantei Teahouse was originally built in Kyoto for Toyotomi Hideyoshi. He later gifted it to the Date Clan and in 1645 it was shifted to a small island on the shoreline. Behind it and on the same island is the small Matsushima Historical Museum.
Both are worth a visit.
