We arrived late afternoon after a day of walking in the lakes. We were met by the staff at reception who were all very friendly and helpful. Rooms were basic, nowhere near to the standard of Ambleside YHA, but the beds were comfortable. We were able to dry out wet clothing and the staff turned the heating on for us because we were a little chilly.

The main downside to the trip was getting woken up at 5am by other guests who arrived back to the hostel extremely drunk. They were shouting and being very rowdy, and were the source of numerous complaints from guests the next morning. In addition, the communal toilets were left in an appalling state with faeces smeared all over the floor of one cubicle.

Staff said that they slept on the far side of the hostel and didn't hear anything.

I doubt I would stay again, because if there were more guest disturbances it is unlikely that there would be any intervention.

Our very first YHA experience, we booked this place for the unrivalled loaction. It's a long drive in first gear up a rough track so be careful what vehicle you bring! As a couple we had a double room with extra bunk. The staff and fellow guests were very helpful and friendly. The room basic but clean and comfortable, the showers barely adequate the evening food very basic like school dinners but thet cater for all diets. The breakfast however was excellent. Best of all the drying room was cavenous and very warm/hot. All our soaked gear was crisp dry within hours.

We have rather got used to luxury in our old age (61 and 52) but food this place fine for the odd nights stay....a whole week might be too much for us, but still we woudl go back. Sorry but we never give 5 stars so 3 is good perhaps it should be more as it onnly cost £26 for the room.

Room Tip: Get a double if you can.

First time in a hostel and was the best experience. Did book a couples room but location and surrounding up a hill was great. The board games and bar on site made it the more enjoyable. Wi-Fi was good. Staff very friendly. Room comfortable (bunkbed) toilet etc clean enough for the job. Location perfect for hellvelyn and walking distance for ullswater also. I would stay here again

Comfy beds, great breakfast, excellent value, helpful and friendly staff, all in a stunning location.
We would really recommend YHA Helvellyn for simple yet comfortable accommodation and as a perfect base for getting into the mountains. The wifi even worked sometimes! Thankyou.
