Hotel Borinquen Mountain Resort
Certificate of Excellence

We stayed 2 nights at the hotel. The rooms reminded us of an old but elegant european mountain resort. Very comfortable and in style. The hotel area itself is superb. We did the crater hike with the hotel guides. Unfortunatly, it was windy as we approached the summit, so we didn't reach the crater. Anyway, after a long hiking day we returned just in time to experience the hot spings - starting with the Natural heated sauna, then the mineral mud, and finished at the hot & cold pools.
The hotel restaurant is in line with the hotel image - elegant, high class service and good food. We had there dinner and breakfast.
On the whole, we didn't feel it was worthwhile to make the trip to the remote Rinkin de la Vieja area, comapred to other options to see in Costa Rica. But if you plan to go there, this hotel is certainly outstanding, and is worth staying while you're there.

I loved the Borinquen hotel. The drive up here is a bit bumpy but part of the Costa Rican driving experience. We had a warm welcome and were greeted with a lovely cool fruit punch and cold towels. The location is beautiful - you really feel like you are getting away from it. I would say this is a 4 star hotel. We really enjoyed the natural sauna which is part of the mud bath experience. The pool was great and the service at the swim up bar was very friendly as was the snack bar. We enjoyed an ATV tour whilst there and saw amazing views of the volcano and the ocean. Spectacular. This was quite expensive but in line with the more expensive hotels we have stayed at. You will need the mozzie repellent and also to stock up on snacks before you get here as you won't want to drive back down the road unless necessary! V relaxing - we didn't want to leave.

We spent a night here as part of our honeymoon. We stayed in the Bungalo's, which offer more privacy in their large rooms (the Villa's are joined). The pool and steam room were great, but be warned drinks were expensive.
It is hilly, but thats expected in mountains.
If your passing by this area, its worth the stop over.

Room Tip: Bungalo's are worth the extra few dollars for the privacy.

We picked this place so we would have a quick drive after flying into Liberia. The Junior Suite was a perfect room with a great view. We were in #5 and think it had the best view. The grounds were beautiful and we watched the sun set over the Pacific every night. Had a toucan in the tree outside our room.

We just got back from a four night stay. It was really nice and the natural beauty of the area bordered on magical. The grounds were beautiful, the staff was friendly, the bed was comfortable. My favorite part was the natural sauna and mudbaths- it was an incredibly unique experience. We also had a really good time on their zip line tour. My only complaint is that the dinner was not very good, though we really enjoyed the free breakfast.

We used this resort to enjoy hikes in Rincon de la Vieja park. If you plan to spend a lot of time in the park, I would recommend a car (one couple felt they were trapped in paradise without a car). Following marked signs (GPS is always helpful), it was a relatively easy approximately hour drive to the park entrance over graveled roads. One or two river crossings would not likely be possible in the rainy season. The fee to the park was only $10 per person per day, but the cost of a tour of the park through the resort was around $160 per person. You don't need a guide (except summit hike) as the trails are well marked.
