The review does not seek to draw upon the Matt Lucas character as a description of the place. Votsala is indeed a beautiful hotel and most visitors will love their stay. The lovely gardens with the over reliance on geranium pots and hibiscus and the one aberration in the weedy budlea. The beautiful view of the Aegean sea, the tiny boardwalk, the lovely dining area are all sights to warm any heart. Children lucky enough to get the lower rooms can run through the apartment either seaside or garden side. If you have children do come here and insist on a ground floor room. Children will have the time of their life. So why the Matt Lucas reference. The 'but no' part comes from a few niggling annoyances. Hot water. Urrrggghhhh. Everyone needs hot water at all times of the day and night. Rationing it is like torture. Then Those Breakfast Forks. They come right out of a childs kitchen toy store. Breakfast is a lovely affair and there have been times when i have marvelled at the chefs creation. An egg flan was the best i have ever had. But a few times the wife did say that this should not have left the kitchen. And finally the place seems to have morphed into an extension of the owners sitting room. His books, photos and personal items are now spilling into the dining area. Some visitors do prefer a non personalised area especially when the establishment is not marketed as a b&b. And lastly please tarmac the drive, guests will know what i mean.

Votsala is perfect if like sun, sea and quite. Throw in good food and friendly service, what more to ask? If you are lucky the owner Iannis gives a guided tour in Mittilini, don't miss it! He is a fantastic story teller.

Such a great place. It isn't a big corporate hotel, they encourage you to eat out and support the other local businesses, go on walks and just relax and be healthy. The whole ethos and feel of the place is wonderful.
Rooms are well decorated, always clean and comfortable. The sea view rooms at the back are great at sunrise. Good location and great swimming. Breakfasts are amazing and varied. Staff attentive and become friends.
The surprise, a pleasant surprise, was the music. From rousing classical in the morning to rock, blues and hip hop in the evening.
This place is wonderfully unique and well worth a visit.

From the begin it feels like meeting friends, basic but wonderful due to direct location at the beachside, truly very friendly and nice hosts, excellent breakfast, great and truly home-cooked dinners and even the simple and cheap lunch card (like Greek salad, all sorts of pasta and omelette) was delicious. They also offer very interesting and fun excursions for little money, we did all of them and they were all just great (like architectural tour by Iannis through his hometown Mytilini, walk and pick-nick dinner on a hidden hill-chapel overlooking the sea with unforgettable sunset, Greek cooking lesson with Daphne etc.). There were several regular guests (coming there for many years) but not many tourists in general due to the fugitive situation probably - which wasn't very visible on the island (and not at all at this spot), only if you wanted to see it, or buy from a aid shop (which we did).
