“Road poorly maintained ”
Review of Pomo Canyon Trail

Pomo Canyon Trail
Reviewed 30 January 2017 via mobile

We visited during January when the campground was closed. The road was washed out from recent flooding and everything was quite sodden... we were lucky to be in an SUV. The trail itself was lovely with good views and moderately strenuous. Outhouses were still open.

It's best to stop at a visitor center to get information because the trail maps for this area are very outdated. You can start at Shell beach to hike this trail but it changes names a few times, and there are two points where a fork leads to a dead end (instead of part of the loop). The start of the trail is across highway 1 from the parking lot, and the campground is at one of the dead ends. A very pretty trail with nice variation in scenery.

Parked in Shell Beach lot and walked Red Hawk trail up and Pomo Canyon trail back, about 7 miles round trip. Views of beaches, as far as Mt. St. Helena and peeks of Russian River Valley, redwood groves with many in fairy ring circle pattern, foot wide streams even in drought with burbling sound. Picnic table is at top of Pomo trail coming up from Shell Beach,it overlooks Jenner, the final curves of the Russian river and the Pacifc Coastline, about 2/3 of a mile to reach the table. Pack that picnic lunch, no reservation needed.

worth the 6 mile hike. I started at Pomo Canyon campground where it is quite steep initially..but beautiful through the redwoods. Pack a lunch and plenty of water. We stopped at Shell Beach for lunch and a rest (fortunately a gorgeous day.) This hike would be difficult for children...

It takes almost 3 hours (more or less) to hike from Shell Beach to the end of Pomo Canyon Trail and back. You can take Red Hill Trail to get back and complete a loop. The starting part (close to Shell Beach) is not that green, but after about 0.6 miles, you'll enter the woods and it's really refreshing and beautiful. Make sure you have some water and something light to eat!
