I had looked forward to staying here for so long. We flew into San Francisco on our honeymoon and hired a car to drive to Tin Lizzie and Fish Camp and Yosemite. The drive took approx. 4 hours, mostly on highways and then a nice slow uphill drive through big tree country to Fish Camp. Tin Lizzie is very easy to find and the building, built in a Victorian white-washed manor style is just so gorgeous. David and Sheran are such a nice couple, welcoming and friendly. We didn’t really bother them for anything but I got the impression from them that nothing would have been too much trouble.
There are three accommodations to rent, the suite, the cottage or the vacation home. The suite is the top floor of the house, the cottage is round the back and the vacation rental is a separate very large building across the road from the main house. We took the cottage, which was the cheapest option of the 3, not only because of the price, but also because we just needed a nice place to sleep as we intended to be out all the time exploring Yosemite.
The cottage is round the back of the house, you have your own key, your own sitting room with TV and DVD player. Sheran has a big box of her favourite DVD’s that she’ll share with you. The bedroom is upstairs with a lovely comfy bed, bath and shower and separate toilet. Plenty space for the two of us.
Breakfast every morning was something different and was such an elegant affair. Best china cups and plates with silver cutlery and antique serving spoons. Day 1 was warm apple/cinnamon bread ( cake) followed by baked plums with squirty cream followed by French toast with bacon, maple syrup and fresh fruit. Tea or coffee. The first day we had our breakfast in the main house.
Day 2 was individual iced cinnamon swirls, followed by baked plums followed by waffles with maple syrup, cream and fresh fruit. This time we had breakfast sitting on the house porch. Idyllic, relaxing, breakfast in the open air surrounded by nature and peace and quiet and brilliant sunshine. Day 3 was blueberry bread (cake) followed by baked plums followed by cheesy quiche with bacon and fresh fruit. Every breakfast was lovely. Iced orange juice and a good pot of tea, served by Sheran and David. Wonderful hosts.
David collects early motors cars, Model T Fords (also known as the Tin Lizzie, hence the name) and will be only too happy to give you a driven guided tour in one around Fish Camp. We mean to but we ran out of time during our 3 days. We slept soundly every night, must have been all the fresh Yosemite air every day. The moment our heads hit the pillows, at 2100, 2130, we were gone!
And lastly, I just wanted to mention the sky. There is a skylight over the bed, pull its cover back and if you wake during the night, marvel at the brightest and clearest skies you’ve ever seen. In fact, get up and go outside and look up at the universe. There’s hardly any light around so you’re seeing the universe as you’ve probably never seen it before and you’ll be able to see the Milky Way across the sky, that’s us looking at our galaxy from the inside.
Just a wonderful relaxing magical place. When I one day come back to Yosemite, I would definitely stay here again. It’s one of the best stays I’ve had anywhere. Oh and Sheran leaves a little treat every night for your return. She’ll have turned the fan on, left a bucket of ice with some chocolate covered strawberries, or cake. There was always diet coke waiting for us (our favourite). Sheran and David are in a class of their own and we wish them all the best and hope they thrive.
