There are a plethora of Mimi's cafes here in southern California. And there are others in California, and a great number of other states. Most are in areas where there is a lack of snow, so that is a point in my favor. I abhor snow. Actually Mimi's headquarters is in Texas, yet they maintain a certain French flair in the design of the restaurant, the menu and the food. Have eaten at several Mimi's here in southern California and when we travel, we usually look to see if there is a MImi's nearby. The ambience in every one we have been in has pretty much been the same - a greeting with the word "bonjour", a smile from the person greeting you and the ability to have a fairly private place to eat and have a conversation. Most tables are inspired by the typical French Cafe or Bistro with booths and a variety of areas within the dining areas. This allows them to arrange for larger parties of diners within a certain operation of the number of patrons. The food is definitely French inspired, yet is American with it variety of flavors. They do have cloth tablecloths and napkins. Alcohol is available, yet don't expect fine French wines. They have a great number of restaurants and if your expecting a top notch wine sommelier you won't find him/ her here. Yet you can get some great American wines mixed with some California and regional wines. Now let's deal with the menu and the food. As I stated earlier, they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Yes, there is a definite French influence and it shows in the variety of entrees. At almost any meal you can choose from a variety of muffins or croissants. Yes, real croissants, not the factory types. Don't want to have the sides exactly as they suggest, you can ask to change them and they will usually comply. Personally I have have had most of the items on their lunch menu and I find them quite satisfying and delicious. For years they had an item called aTuna Manhattan. It's been replaced by an item now labeled Tuna Melt. Watch out for this one. It's quite delicious and satisfying. Our guest had Mushroom Brie Burger and he raved over it. My better half had a Spinach Salmon Salad and she actually found it quite satisfying and filling. My personal favorite was finding a person who knows how to make a real Arnold Palmer. Madison stepped right up made an almost perfect one and refilled it to perfection. Now come the best item on the menu. Their French Onion soup. Want to know what real French Onion soup tastes like? We have been to many Mimi's and every one we have been to has served it perfectly every time. You've got to go for their French Onion Soup. Just like in France, No doubt.
