The different pastry choices are so tempting. There is seating indoors and outdoors. There are familiar choices and some Korean ones that I'm trying out. A nice oasis in a busy shopping center. Their cronut is delicious with their gourmet coffees.

The pastries here are varied and delicious. We tried at least ten different kinds and enjoyed every single one of them. We even tried one that had a mildly sweet bean paste filling - it was wonderful! I've been back twice already. I have served these at brunch and they are always a big hit. They open very early in the morning, so it's a great place to stop for some breakfast treats.

Paris Baguette in Glendale looks like a Japanese shop that bakes and sells French style bread and pastries, but in fact, it's owned by a South Korean food company. It's clean. It offers a pleasant, although small, place to sit for a quick cup of coffee with a piece of pastry in the morning while reading a newspaper.

What they sell is what most Americans would call glazed "Danish" pastries made with croissant dough and fresh fruit fillings, pastry cream and fresh fruits, cheese, chocolate, and because they're Asian, beans.

Their pastries look very good, and they are fresh, but the croissant dough is too airy with too many bubbles. The consequence of that is that their pastries don't have enough substance. They have plain croissants without all the bells and whistles, but you must ask for them, and my plain croissant had a sweet glaze. I don't know if that was a baker's mistake or if that is the way that they always make plain croissants.

When you walk in, there are tongs and trays; take one of each, walk around the small display case, read the tiny labels that have fuller descriptions in Korean than in English, and use the tongs to make your selection.

The Korean website is http://www.paris.co.kr/

Will I return? Maybe: Although Paris Baguette was not particularly good, it is head and shoulders better than Porto's.

Will I recommend it? Lukewarmly.

We actually visited the Paris Baguette in the Santa Anita Mall, but I guess they are all the same. The layout is clever: you can wander around picking your own pastries out of the closed display cabinets. Then you go up to the counter and pay for them and any drinks. I had a chocolate croissant and some of the house drip coffee. The croissant was quite excellent - it melted in the mouth, and was just buttery enough, with a slightly crunchy exterior. Importantly, the chocolate was not overdone: just a nicely sized piece running through the middle of the croissant. So often you get these things covered in chocolate on the outside and stuffed with chocolate on the inside: you might as well buy a bar of chocolate! The house coffee was also very good - strong and flavourful.
