What a little gem hidden away and off the beaten path! We had a long day and were headed back to the hotel when we found a list of area restaurants. It was so fortunate that we picked this one! The outside of the building is a little misleading and parking is limited. The interior is extremely relaxing. The fireplace in the lounge in the entry way is so inviting! The French Martini was great! The ambiance was cozy and soothing without being too sophistocated. It was elegant but friendly. We were casually dressed and we fit right in with the crowd. The entertainment was fabulous! We were so glad to hear the live piano music performed by a lovely young 22 year old student. She was incredible. We could have stayed for hours. Dinner was good and the service was very good.

This is Glendale's special occasion restaurant where you can be a regular without going broke. We first came here to celebrate more than twenty years ago and have been coming at least twice a month ever since. The Maitre d', Reuben, and his team provide cordial, unstuffy and seamless service. The restaurant is definitely a throwback but in a nice way -- basic food is prepared perfectly, for the most part and special requests are welcome. Which is probably a good thing since you won't find a Top Chef "Cheftestant"'s unique creations here. Think more about crab salad, perfectly cooked fish, pastas with great sauces and osso buco, to name a few. This is a nice place for group celebrations, a business dinner or a quiet, romantic night out. Decor is very traditional (fabric-covered walls, white tablecloths) but we've seen people there in bluejeans and they are made to feel as welcome as the people in suits. Business has fallen off since a change in ownership a few years ago and the downturn in the economy but food and service remain the same. Prices have gone up on steaks and the like but pasta prices remain affordable for most -- and you can order appetizer portions of pastas or share appetizers and still get plenty for most people. Shared dishes are divided in the kitchen for you in advance, so nobody will know. Recommended dishes: Calamari appetizer, caesar salad (not on the menu but you can ask for it), angel hair with tomato sauce, papardelle with sausage, any of the fish preparations.

After relying on the good reviews I'd read for Gennaro's, I was extremely embarrassed that I'd brought my out-of-town guests to one of the worst dining experiences ever. Although there were only a couple of other tables of diners present, service was unbelievably slow and inattentive. After our entrees still hadn't arrived an hour later, we asked to have them boxed to go since our guests were too tired to wait any longer. To our surprise, dinner for six all fit into one small plastic sack smaller than a grocery bag. The entrees could each fit onto a dessert plate, although they were priced the same as Spago's entrees but nowhere near as tasty. A complete waste of time, money, and appetite.
