Val’s has the best no frills burger ever! Make sure to get the Mama Burger on a french roll so it can handle the juices! The milkshakes are also legendary

Mentioned by many (Sunset Magazine, other large newspapers) as the best burger.

They will make your burger rare, if you like, which is hard to find these days. These are the best burgers and milkshakes in the Bay Area, with almost old-fashioned prices.

It's a cute diner too. The fries aren't the type I like, but you be the judge. Onion rings, BLTs, grilled sandwiches are also good. Breakfast foods are only ok.

This is super classic American food. If you have out-of-country visitors, bring them here.

Cash only. Very friendly service.

On your b-day they will bring you a free sundae and sing.

It is worth the drive here if you are in the Bay Area and searching for the best burger.
If you are already in the area then you (should) know that Hayward and Castro Valley have lots, lots, lots of burgers, pizza, and Denny's-type restaurants. Good ethnic food is hard to find, but burgers we have.

We visited our daughter's family for Thanksgiving and while there, we went to Val's Burger restaurant. It was our first time there and we were pleasantly surprised. From the outside, the look of the restaurant is like an older, non-distinguished building amidst a parking lot. Once you get inside, the environment is transformed to what you remembered as a diner when you were a kid back in the 1950s. There is a lot of exposed wood on the walls and ceiling and the classic opened counter where the food is prepared and the milkshakes are made. BTW, they sell so many delicious milkshakes that there is a dedicated person just making them. They have numerous ice cream flavors and they really load the milkshakes with ice cream. They are so big that 3 people can share one shake. They also offer malts, which is my favorite in vanilla ice cream. The restaurant is well known for their burgers, but they also have steaks, fish and sandwiches. Of the 3 sizes of burgers, we all got the smallest 1/3/ pounder called the baby burger. This was a good size for us with cheese, lettuce and tomato. All of the other garnishings are at the table and include ketchup, mustard, mayo, relish and pickles. The large cut fries are equally delicious. All in all, our meal and visit was a very pleasant one and we would recommend a visit to Val's to anyone who wants great food at a reasonable price in a classic diner environment.

With a long history of service to East Bay residents, Vals has consistently served one of the best if not THE best burger. Service is quick and friendly, and their just as good as take out or at the restaurant . The French fries are freshly made and served in a generous portion which can be shared. The milkshakes are as from an old fashion soda fountain and not to be missed. But a word of caution; it’s a full meal if combined with a burger and fries. I’ve been going to Vals for 20+ years and have never been disappointed. Note: bring cash as credit cards are not accepted.

Great food, atmosphere reminds me of the 50s restaurants. Service is fast and great. Hamburgers are good. If you don’t mind waiting its worth it.
