One of the few places in America I would come back for breakfast. No feeling you have after eating typical American food prepared with "no love" for food. Eggs Benedict were delicious, portion big enough to leave something for my husband to try :) pancakes our daughter ate were huge and tasty. Cozy garden to eat outside was full, so we had to have our breakfast inside, but it was refreshing feeling to sit in the cool room coming from the heat

Nice outside seating area, entertainer playing music and singing. Food was good but a little cold. They substituted one item because they were out of the item with asking us if it was OK. It was not. They are short of servers causing delays in ordering, getting your food and paying your bill. We did the garden walk afterwards. Very pleasant gardens.

Four of us needed a solid meal before a day at the Tennis Gardens and found it at the Cafe at Shields. Very enjoyable al fresco brunch on the patio beneath umbrellas. Date pancakes made with date sprinkles invented by Mr. Shields in 1936 as a sugar equivalent, with date butter, creative and delicious. Eggs Benedict, sautéed mix of colorful heritage potatoes, side order of fruit, best bacon ever. No fancy Italian coffee is available, just a good cup of American. Service variable but cheerful. We enjoyed this so much that we went back the next morning and did it all over again. Walked the gardens (free with meal purchase) while we were there.

There is ample outdoor seating at this restaurant, some in the open, others shaded by umbrellas. My wife and I both had waffles with various accompaniments. The waffles were quite good. We also both preferred the homemade strawberry topping and whipped cream vs. peaches with cinnamon or maple syrup. Service was good, as well. We will be back.

Definitely don't understand the fuss over this place. Everything about it is fairly average, including the food. The outdoor dining is bereft of ambience, but the worst part might be the placement of a table & highly ill organized reservations taker in the middle of everything. Your entire outdoor dining experience will be impacted by this. The day we dined there, the woman taking the reservations appeared confused and ill organized. It became comical when she routinely called people on their cell phones to advise them that their tables were ready and with very few exceptions, all of the diners were standing right in front of her. This entire operation should move to a more discreet location so as not to be part of everyone's dining experience. The food is so-so. I would not return.
