This was our first time at a Bed and Breakfast experience and it was a memorable one. We stayed in the “Apple Sweet”, and it was a very nice room. We spent our 31th anniversary together here and found it to be a very quiet, relaxing, and enjoyable place.

The grounds are well kept, yet still lend themselves to the natural surroundings. There are multiple places the owner Ed has established to sit and enjoy the quiet and seclusion; while allowing you to take in the natural beauty of the area. It is slightly off the main road and in a wooded neighborhood so you can take an early morning walk and not have to worry about traffic. It is very close to the main town, about 5 minutes or less of a drive.

The inside is very well kept and well decorated by the other owner and wife Dawn. It appears they have thought of everything and Dawn took her time to explain all the amenities and where they were located. They provided a telephone number to us in the event they are were not around and we need anything. Of course, I had to check everything out; so I tested the flashlight and lantern and both worked. Extra pillows and blankets and an iron and ironing board were in the armoire. They have a little small note on the vanity mirror to inform you if you had forgotten any toiletries to contact them and they would provide what you needed.

As for the breakfast, Ed really outdid himself, as Dawn had to attend an event in town and he was left to be the cook. Wow, is all I can say; he provided a poached pear with a sauce that rocked and then presented some stuffed french toast; that my wife and I talked about the next day. Absolutely awesome food, service and atmosphere. We shared our breakfast with two other couples and to the best of my knowledge there was nothing left on anyone's plate. Ed was a great host and along with the other two couples, conversation was very strong and enjoyable.

As for any negatives; well I guess there would only be one thing. Breakfast was served at 9 am, a bit late for us, but then again, it was worth the wait. Also, to offset that negative is the fact that in the main entrance area, Dawn and Ed have provide plenty of items to eat /snack and to drink if you chose to grab a something.

The bed was comfortable, the room clean, food was great, and the atmosphere was inviting; what else can you hope for? We definitely plan to come back at some point and have already shared our experience with family and friends.

I know that to an “experienced” B&B person and to the “in general complainer”, that there is bound to be something to improve or complain about; but we found this place to have exceeded or first time B&B expectation. You can tell that Dawn and Ed have attempted to take everything into account and have a passion for what they are doing.

Room Tip: No advice as we only stayed one night.

I called for reservations on Friday for Saturday. Very professional as to what was available and pricing. Booked the Rosebud Cottage and received confirmation with directions to this B & B via email that afternoon. Upon arrival, check in was professional and very well done explaining how the wood stove operates and various features of the room. The room was well appointed as was the bathroom. The lobby area was accessible 24 hours with all sorts of beverages and videos to watch or take back to the room. The breakfast was out of this world and a gourmet delight; orange slices with a raspberry sauce followed by an egg souffle with sausage links with juice and coffee. We had a wonderful time and we will return again.

My wife and I enjoyed our stay at the Butterfield Bed and Breakfast. We stayed for three nights in the Feathernest room, which is their smallest but the only one available at the time. But it was, as they say, quite cozy. The bed was a little smaller than we like but it's a small room and worked out fine. The owners have a large selection of movies available and the room has a DVD and VCR player, which comes in handy since they roll up the sidewalks in Julian (small town) early at night. They also have plenty of books and magazines on hand. Breakfast each morning was prepared by the hosts and was delicious. It generally consisted of coffee, orange juice and water to drink and a two course meal; the first course is fruit, either poached pears, or oranges, or bananas prepared in a special way. The second course is, for example, sausage and quiche. They serve breakfast at about 9 am. We found that we didn't need to eat again until early suppertime, usually about 4 pm. The hosts were very gracious and friendly. For example, on night the power went out; we called the hosts so they could report it; they also told us where we could find a flashlight in the room. Though the feathernest is small, we had enough space to unpack and store our clothes and move about without a problem. The bathroom is big enough for two with a walk in shower and all the amenities (soap, shampoo, conditioner, robes, towels, etc.) were provided.

We would definitely stay here again and would highly recommend the Butterfield B&B to anyone. They also have a table and gazebo outside with a place to watch the stars at night. So, it's very relaxing and romantic.
