We have stayed in many bed & breakfasts around the country having really had no bad experiences. This B&B by no means was a bad experience but I had a harder time rating it "Very Good". The rooms are definitely older, located on multi levels and are what I would call "dated". The room itself was very clean with a decor that was decorated with older antique type pieces. The TV was older and smaller with not a very clear picture. Many books and DVR's were available. The grounds outside are in need of some work as they seem to be way overgrown. The Inn keepers themselves were extremely friendly and gracious and the breakfast that was served was exceptional. Please do not perceive this as a negative review as all in all it was a fairly good experience but one that we personally would not go back to.

The Rosebud cottage provided us the privacy and space we desired during our stay at this lovely bed & breakfast. It was basically a large combined bedroom/sitting room with a wood stove in between. There was a separate bathroom vanity and shower area and a large walk-in closet. Plenty of room for two or more. The wood stove kept us warm, as the weather was cold, rainy and windy. One small parking area is directly outside the front door of the cottage, but we were not disturbed by any of the guest's departures. Dawn & Ed have owned this establishment for 17 years and it shows in the care they provide their guests. Breakfasts were varied and quite filling. The back porch pantry is open 24 hours for any snacks, drinks, or use of the microwave if needed. Unfortunately, due to the weather, we were unable to enjoy the grounds, which were beautifully landscaped.

Ed and Dawn were the perfect hosts tending to every whim. Fantastic breakfast. Stayed in the Stanza Italia room. Very comfortable with fireplace, queen size bed, conveniently located near the gazebo and dinning room. Outside of downtown Julian means walking around rural roads and trails. Saw wild turkeys, jay birds and other species.

We have family in Julian that we visit about once a year. We've stayed in a number of places, but had not discovered Butterfield until now. I can't imagine we'll stay anywhere else when we visit from now on.

Our hosts, Ed and Dawn, are wonderful folks and seem to attract great guests as well. We were here three days and most mornings we didn't want to leave when breakfast was done, but sat around talking with our fellow visitors for more than an hour after we finished eating. The breakfasts, by the way, were amazing. The first morning we had poached pears, followed by stuffed french toast and bacon. The others were equally decadent and delicious.

We stayed in the Rosebud Cottage. Very spacious, with a homey feeling. The bed was extremely comfortable. When it comes to mattresses, I'm very much a Goldilocks. This one's too hard, that one's too soft. But, this one was just right and I slept very soundly.

If you like to watch movies (we do, but generally not when we're vacationing), they have a huge selection. They also have a very nice selection of books if you like to read before bed.

We will definitely be returning, and trying out some of the other rooms.

My wife and I were looking for a short, relaxing and romantic weekend to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary. We were fortunate that we found the Butterfield Bed & Breakfast, which fit the bill perfectly! Dawn and Ed have been doing this for many years, and they are extremely welcoming and gracious hosts. I believe they've owned the property for 17 years, and they are very knowledgeable about Julian and almost everything that surounds it. We loved our room (the Country Corner), which was warm, comfortable and spotlessly clean! The location is fantastic, close to the Nickle Beer Company, and just a short drive to the heart of old Julian. By the way, the breakfasts were sumptuous and very tasty! We highly recommend this B&B for your Julian stay.
