Stay on Main Hotel and Hostel
Reviewed 29 January 2017

Out of all the hotels I've stayed at around the world, this hotel may be the one with the longest review that I will ever make. It made a big impression on me.

The good thing about Stay on Main is the location - it is in the middle of downtown LA with easy transportation access, restaurants are everywhere and some attractions can be reached by walking. The downside... the hotel is too old and has not been refurbished well but the website showed pictures of rooms which are modern/refurbished but those are only a handful and located on just a few floors. Majority of the rooms are still old, creaky and musky - I was disappointed as I felt the website gallery was misleading. The hotel has an interesting history which some people may find exciting but getting random knocks on the door at night was creepy, walking on poorly lit and uninviting corridors was madness. It's good that they have a security desk at the lobby but I observed for 5 days that I stayed that they never did check who comes in and out, whether they're hotel guests or not. Anyone can just go up and down inside the hotel using the easily accessible lift. I just hope they read this and beef up their security - please.

Breakfast is inclusive on the rate but will be the same everyday - waffle, instant oatmeal, 3 cereal varieties, boxed orange juice, coffee, tea. It's good coffee though.

All the staffs I've encountered were friendly and helpful. Service request when the ensuite bathroom and sink clogged was really fast, he came for repair in less than 5 minutes and I was pleasantly surprised.

Overall, my suggestion to my fellow travelers going to Downtown LA is to consider booking early at some other place so as to get fair rate and better value for money.

Room Tip: Ask for a newly refurbished room at the front desk when checking in.

We had a good stay here, easy to catch the subway from... Plenty of rooftop bars to get to, great pizza down the road... Close enough to Dodger Stadium for the concert... Over all, good value for money as the room was tidy enough

The people at the desk are very nice and pleasant. With a limited budget this was a good place to stay for a 2 or 3 day stay. NOT the best above the lobby. Don't get fooled by the lavish shiny lobby. The area is not the best but i did feel comfortable around. It was either an hotel by LAX or this one in Downtown L.A. some views are not that bad. The bed was comfortable and pretty good channels.
Will > come back to this hotel? ONLY if i had a crisis or last resort.

Room Tip: American Horror Story buffs would love this place

This place is a dump. That's fine, since you're paying for a dump. What's not fine is the arrogance of the personnel.

What's good?
The electricity outlets work

What's bad?
The internet doesn't work.
The cleaners do not clean.
No toilet paper or sinks to wash your hands with the shared toilets.
Cold coffee at the breakfast.
The breakfast has fruit loops and waffles. That's it.

Why did I even bother to write a review?
After Airbnb open ended, I wanted to offer the hotel an opportunity to get a good review. I kindly pointed out that the cleaners only pretended to clean the showers and that the internet doesn't work. The guy behind the front desk said he didn't believe me and that I should find another hotel. I asked to speak to his manager and he said he was his own manager. In regards to the problems mentioned, here were the responses:
- You didn't pay for internet so it shouldn't matter
- I don't care if the shower is dirty since I don't use it

First of all, if you book a room with internet and pay for it, you are paying for internet. I didn't pay for an elevator or a door either, but their listing said they were included so I expect them to work. Second, if you pay for a place which includes cleaning you expect cleaning. Having a person using the title "cleaner" to into the shower, look at it and get out, isn't cleaning when they leave a big amount of hair behind. Third, if a guest is so kind to point out the faults of the staff, the management should be happy. In this case, the manager just got angry.

I won't even bother to describe the room as it's so gross even rats won't set their foot here.
