“Nice location overall and a quiet, quaint cottage”

We were looking for a 1 bedroom vacation rental in the Santa Barbara area and this one made our short list. Its an old cottage, actually half of a duplex - so noise might be an issue depending on who is next door. There were some vistors for a few days in the cottage adjoining ours but they were very quiet, which was nice. The location is on a quiet street with little traffic. its about a block and a half walk to a beach access with steps down to the beach - its nice at low tide. you could walk to butterfly beach as well, but in montecito they frown on sidewalks, so its a bit of a treacherous walk at night (although traffic is light). anyway, a nice quiet neighbourhood, but it IS close to the train tracks (which they don't mention in the property description) - so you definitely hear the Amtrak coming through, but thankfully the last train i heard was about 10:30 at night and the earliest 6:30 a.m., so we could still sleep.

the cottage itself is a ca. 1915 era building, quite open and airy with lots of windows, and skylights, exposed rafters. overall comfy, can be chilly in the mornings, bring rubber-soled slippers for the cold floors since shoes in the house are frowned upon. Another thing about the floors - they are very slippery (in socks) so watch out!

there is TV and internet (slow, but it works). the kitchen is good. the bathroom is ok, but as previous reviewers have suggested, negotiating the claw-foot tub dor a shower might be tricky for some. If you have any mobility issues I would definitely caution you.

the back patio area is small, but nice to sit with a coffee and read.

We did have one small issue upon checking in, and it was dealt with very quickly by the caretaker/manager Robert - thank you!

to sum up; liked the location, quietness, coziness, citrus trees; did not like the tub/shower set up, slippery floors, and especially not the whole idea of a cleaning fee - especially when the guests are doing the dishes, hauling out garbage and recycling, etc. cleaning your rental property should be the cost of doing business, IMHO.

PS the dishwasher doesn't work very well - most of the glasses and cutlery were dirty, we ended up washing stuff by hand

Management Response

Input from guests always helps us to do our job better. We have mentioned the slippery floors to the owner. A different cleaning product is probably the answer there. All coastal properties up and down the coast are going to experience the train noise as so much of Amtraks rails run along the ocean. We will consider putting wording about the train proximity in our contract to individual renters. Cleaning fees are a standard procedure for all vacation rentals as there is a great deal of preparation that goes into preparing a home for guests and cleaning up after them when they depart. We not only clean but replenish all the supplies guests have consumed, fill propane tanks, check that the home was left in good condition and do added cleaning if the home was left in poor condition, which often times happen. Thank you for your kind words about this adorable cottage!

“Great location, extremely cute”
Reviewed 13 August 2011 for a stay in June 2011

No problems with the location, for sure. No significant traffic on the side street that it is on, and house is set back from the street anyway. Beach was very close , a short walk down the street and around the corner. Weather really kept us from enjoying that much, as it was too cold in June but no fault of the cottage! Very nicely appointed with a few signature antiques along with comfortable beach cottage furnishings. Kitchen had some serious high-end appliances. Great patio overlooking a creek. Not noisy, although the other half was not rented most of our stay. We would definitely return.
