We were told that the place was kind of run down, and that it wasn't one of the better neighborhoods -- but we found the place freshly and cheerfully renovated inside and out, pleasant extras in each room, like iron and blow dryer, microwave, fridge, flat panel tv, new heat pump, etc. OK, so the closet had a luggage rack but the rod for hanging clothes was missing. We were so busy, we didn't bother to tell the staff, who were otherwise amazingly gracious, helpful, and polite. The fountain in the courtyard was another nice surprise to enjoy as we sat at the patio table enjoying the sun.

Room Tip: The first floor by the fountain is great...

Old, dirty, repairs half done, dirty tissue wad behind door, stained towels and bath mat. Bathroom door won't close. No idea what room the people got who rated this place "very good". I wouldn't trust those reviews. First time trip advisor has been wrong. Only plus is the two block walk to BART.

Room Tip: go across the street, temescal inn looked decent from the outside

We are very sorry to hear that the cleanliness of your room does not appear to have been of the standard that we generally provide for our guests, and we are disappointed to have let our standards slip to such an extent. We will ensure that our housekeeping team are retrained, to ensure that such issues do not occur again. Thank you for your very valuable and useful feedback.

I'm not giving this place a one star review because check in was easy and the people working were super nice. Everything else, not so much. Room reeked of old cigarette smoke, toilet had feces on it, the carpet and furniture was old and dusty, there was graffiti in the drawers, there was about a 2 inch gap between the base of the front door and the floor, the TV didn't work, the people next to me were smoking although I was on a "non-smoking" floor, bed sheets had stains and lastly the mini fridge had crud all over it. This room was like something I'd expect in New York's Times Square in 1979. Especially for how much they're charging. Thumbs. Down.

We had not stayed in a motel before so were unsure what to expect. The rooms were very basic and could have been slightly cleaner but nothing too bad. There was always available parking which was very convenient. The room smelt strongly of smoke unfortunately, which for two non-smokers wasn't very pleasant and the walls were very thin!

Room Tip: No available lift so bear in mind if mobility problems or lots of luggage!

Inn is 500m away from MacArthur BART and 100m away from nearest bus stops (#6 bus to downtown Oakland every 8-10 mins - or #800 night bus from downtown San Fran.) 5 min walk to BART and 16 mins to downtown SanFran for $3.65 one way is as quick to get to San Francisco as walking from a downtown San Fran hotel that will cost you twice the price per night's stay.

My room was on ground floor (no lift/elevator to upper floors). Two double beds in the room yet still had plenty of space available. Bed was very comfortable with plenty of pillows available.

Room was so quiet you could hardly hear the fountain outside or even the mini fridge in the room - even at 3.00am. Curtains good at blocking out the light. Very large work desk and drawers still didn't diminish the size of the room. Filtered coffee provided in the room too - about only complaint was that there was nowhere by the desk to plug it into (double socket taken up by TV & box), so had to take tray to make-up bench beside the washbasin and plug it in there - on the plus side though this made cleaning up the spill into the tray when I forgot to swap over cups while making the coffee very easy !

I felt safe walking around the neighbourhood - even at night - and even walking 9 blocks down Telegraph Ave to the Commonwealth Pub (TIP - if worried about the homeless sleeping under the MacArthur Freeway bridge stay on the east side of Telegraph, their tent city is on the west side of the street.)

Room Tip: All rooms are within spitting distance of Carl's Jr - however there are plenty of other better eating choices close by.
