We spent our wedding night in one of the casitas twenty-one years ago and we love going back for special occasions or anytime we want to enjoy a delicious dinner in an enchanting environment, tucked away in the hills overlooking Fairbanks and San Dieguito.
We requested a table by the fireplace and it was a nice, private location. They have the most spectacular floral arrangements throughout the restaurant and Rancho Valencia property. The fireplace sported one of beautiful florals... perfect for our anniversary dinner!
A bottle of Veuve Clicquot was also perfect for our dinner and the waiter was excellent throughout the evening..... just present enough but not overbearing.
As starters, I enjoyed the squash risotto with a squash blossom on top which was filled with goat cheese and gently prepared tempura style and laid atop the risotto. A beautiful and delicious starter. My husband selected the lobster salad and it was both stunning and delicious (sorry I forgot to take pics). There were accents of grilled prosciutto and grilled peaches. Excellent savory/sweet additions with the generous portion of lobster meat.
For our entrees, I chose Iberico pork with morel mushrooms and sunchokes (I love morels and they are so hard to find in restaurants). The dish was beautiful and the portion generous both in pork as well as in morels... there must have been twenty morels... I was in heaven!! The pork was so flavorful and tender... almost with a salty crust of some type... so delicious.
My husband’s entree was the duck breast with grilled cherries.... perfection as well! Absolutely delicious and the presentation was artful.
For dessert (it was our anniversary after all), we enjoyed the chocolate soufflé which was very lovely both in taste and in presentation, although their method of opening it up to pour in the creme anglaise was to use a knife. My husband stepped in to use the Julia Child method of two spoons, gently pulling apart the center. Our sweet dessert server was too young to know who Julia Child was.... sigh... and in a culinary setting!! Oh well! Julia could rest well knowing we enjoyed a soufflé with thoughts of her!!❤️
Much to celebrate at Rancho Valencia last night, both for our anniversary and for the delicious meal, wonderful service, and beautiful setting. We will be back!!
