A local landmark that is an acquired taste, little more casual than I need first thing in the morning.

I was in Santa Monica on a solo trip over June/July 2011 and was staying in the Travelodge just across the road and this place was a godsend! Good priced coffee, free wi-fi and always something "interesting" going on of an afternoon/evening!

OK let's answer some of the critics. Yes, the place looks ramshackle; if you don't like that look or are not comfortable with it go to Starbucks.

Yes, the coffee comes in whatever vessel comes to hand, occasionally a glass pint beer mug; don't like it? See above!

Yes the staff can appear a bit dismissive at times if you don't know the precise correct way to ask for your drink; if you get past the 'hello' stage with them or visit a couple of times you'll find they are quite amenable/chatty.

The wi-fi (free and plenty of plug sockets too) was perfectly adequate/fast and reliable for browsing/emailling when I was there using my iPhone, and nobody else around me was griping about it. If it's not good enough for you, stay in the office, or go home! It's free!

Yes, the parking situation is not good, however there is a supermarket across the road with a big car park, hint-hint, or the Travelodge, with about 3 different car parks, hint-hint. Street parking is meter controlled - just take a load of quarters and pop back out every hour!

The coffee is delicious and made how strong/weak you want it. The atmosphere is certainly bohemian/quirky; it's just a GREAT place to hang out!

Virtually every evening there is something scheduled. Usually some sort of open-mic event. Thursdays is comedy (bad language aplenty - be warned!), some of the acts quite funny, some embarrasingly bad, some just trying out new material, some just getting on the stage to get used to it and talking for a few mins! Sunday afternoon is some sort of vaudeville/ye olde music hall type of affair where people just get on stage, play the resident piano, sing, folk appear with guitars and just join in jam style - extremely quirky! Sunday evening is feminist comedy evening - no woman bashing! Again, some good, some bad, some indifferent. Hosted usually by a very funny Christian girl who dresses in different things for each intro, and a lady called Star Penn (?) who's laugh will make you chuckle itself! The majority of the other regulars are the typical Jewish/neurotic style and, while I was there, a girl called Maria Marquez (bad language alert!) whom the whole world is against! I just sat at the back, drink in hand and revelled in it all!

Other nights there maybe a band on, open-mic performances etc etc. I even walked in on an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting one morning! It's open from the crack of dawn to about midnight during the week, earlier closing at weekends.

One thing is certain, it's NEVER boring! Give it a try, in fact, give it a couple of tries, the more you go the more you'll love it! It's definately more than a coffee shop!

The Unurban is a neat-o little cafe with a great atmosphere and friendly people. Their tea is very yummy, and they have a good selection of sandwiches / soups / bakery stuffs. Lots of outlets for your laptop (free wifi) and comfy furniture; a great place to stop and relax.

The atmosphere here is all about supporting creativity. There's lots of art on the walls, mismatched furniture, and maybe best of all, electrical outlets all over for laptop users.

You want to hear what kind of music the locals are making in Santa Monica and West L.A.? Drop by for one of the coffee houses' frequent open mics. Check out the website for details.

There's live music in the front, and enough distance from the back room that you can concentrate if you want to or pause and listen in. I've been there when the tunes were 20s jazz pieces played by a pianist and accompanied by a clarinetist who had just dropped in.

Good coffee. Haven't had the food, but they were cooking chili when I was there the other day and it smelled amazing.
