I travel to Susanville on business and have stayed at a couple of places. The best I can tell, the High Country Inn is by far the best. The rooms are very clean and they serve a fairly hearty breakfast. In August, I brought my children and my sister, and they enjoyed the pool and jacuzzi while I was working. What stands out more than anything is the service from the gentleman who staffs the front desk. He took time to show us maps and help us plan a half day trip up to the Susan River and the Biz Johnson Trail...carefully considering the needs of the kids. I am due there again Sunday and was worried about the road and weather conditions coming in from Reno. Again, the same gentlemen took time on the phone to go over my various concerns about travel to Susanville in the winter weather. I felt much assured after the call. All in all...I highly recommend them! Oh yes...the rooms on the back side of the property are the best.

I forgot to post a review for our stay last Thanksgiving, and we are staying there again this year:

First, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised that Susanville is a charming little town. The drive to Mt. Lassen National Park is, maybe, an hour away-- and worth the trip. Reno is just under 90 minutes away.
We stayed here as guests of a relative, who lives here. My first impression of our room was that it was spacious and very clean. The bathroom was pristine with some useful amenities. The flat screen TV was a nice touch, with plenty of channels to choose from. The free Wi-Fi worked great. Breakfast was an added bonus. The dining area was spotlessly clean. I'm not a big waffle fan, but making my own was a fun challenge. They were hot and delicious! Wide variety of breakfast foods, from cold cereal and milk, to oatmeal, yogurts, biscuits and gravy, Jimmy Dean sausage mufffin (prepacked to be microwaved), juices and coffee... everything was presented spotlessly clean. The front office staff always had a smile and cheerful hello. We had no complaints and would stay here again.
One note: we noticed a sign that said "No Pets" as we swiped our card to enter our building. Yet, we saw a woman with two little dogs walking out of a room. So, I'm not sure if this is a pet-friendly property, or people don't regard rules. The next morning, we noticed the carpet was freshly shampooed (where the dogs had stayed).

Howdy, Foodiewife... (love your TA handle)

Thanks for the thorough review! Nicely stated on all counts.

We are a non-pet facility; however, we give deference to service dogs. We host many guests with disabilities, for whom service, dogs provide a quality of life not otherwise capable without them.

As you saw, we ensure subsequent guests, those without the need for a service dog or not dog friendly, never have to be inconvenienced.

We hope to see you every time you visit our part of California! :-)

When we pulled into the parking lot the High Country Inn looked well kept and inviting. The inside was not. We had gotten a deal on the rate, $100 a night, so we weren't expecting the Ritz. But the High Country Inn was barely adequate for our two night stay. The hallway smelled of cigarette smoke and was poorly lit. Our room was dingy, the furniture had seen better days and the bath towels were so thin you could see through them.

Greetings, Donna A....

We're not sure you placed the correct review with our property? None of what you described fits our property.

First, we are a 100% non-smoking facility and charge, anyone who does smoke in a room, a $200 fee for us to remove all the furniture, shampoo the carpet and run an ozone machine in the room for over 12 hours to mitigate the smoke.

Additionally, with regard to the layout of our hotel, we are well lighted through every hall and entrance at night and, with many windows and doors (doors that require a key card to enter 24 hours a day) the sunlight is clearly visible during the day.

We are dedicated to providing a safe, clean and comfortable stay for each guest and hope you'll take another look at your review to see it could not have been our hotel.

I visit Susanville often and always stay at The High Country Inn. The staff are professional and friendly, the hotel is well maintained and the rooms are very clean.
The lobby is warm and inviting, it's a great place to gather with friends and family.
Breakfast is included, with a variety of choices.
Overall a good experience I recommend.

Very clean spacious rooms. Desk clerk kind. Had a second floor and there are no elevators. Comfortable bed. Breakfast was good only down was 3 windows were open and very cold. Cereal, bread for toast, biscuits and gravy, prepackaged buns and breakfast sandwiches. Would definally stay again!
