Description: A busy family-run village pub with a good reputation for its food. It has a bar with real fire, lounge, and large restaurant at the rear. The village has a series of walks through beautiful countryside with wildlife and the remains of Bishop Middleham Castle.

I went here on a Friday night recently.
It was about 8pm and on arrival I felt a little uncomfortable at first as it was like walking into the front room of someone's home! It was full of locals who were actually very friendly and I ended up having a 5 minute conversation with a lovely guy!

Anyway, the pub itself, like I say, is what you would expect of a village pub BUT with incredibly tasty food!

I had the beef and ale pie which I simply cannot fault. It was huge!!! And a full proper pie encased in pastry, not these pastry lid things! It was packed full of meat and was just amazing! The chips and veg are brought out separately in a terrine and there was plenty of choice of veg. My friend had the surf & turf and he said it was beautiful also! I wish I'd taken a picture of our food!

Anyway, pleasantly surprised and I will definitely be returning!

We visit the Cross Keys on a regular basis. The same family have run the pub for well over a decade. Bryan, Karin, Zoe and Mark are a lovely family whose main aim is to provide good food at a decent price and excellent service. Do they succeed? YES!
We have never yet been disappointed with any meal we have had. Their Sunday carvery is always excellent - melt in the mouth meat and nicely cooked veg.
Other meals are equally nice - there is a decent vegetarian option - my son likes the goat's cheese and caramelised onion tart; I love their steak pie; the scampi comes in mountainous portions.
The Cross Keys is our go-to pub for big family occasions. The beer is really good too.

First visit for us, went with relative who are regular visitors. The food was excellent, spoilt for choice by the menu. Our food arrived very quickly, the quality of the food was excellent, the waitress was very efficient and polite as was the barmaid. The price of the food and drinks was very good value for money. We will hopefully be back.

This was the second time my wife and I have visited, the first was for a Sunday Lunch, tonight was for an evening meal. The restaurant area was quiet with only about 12 people eating, so getting a table for 2 was no problem, explained that we could have the carvery or any choice from the blackboard which was more extensive than than the menu on the table. Staff extremely polite, helpful and efficient. Both the starters and the main meals were top drawer with absolutely no complaints what so ever, we left feeling over stuffed due to the large portions provided.Simple advice to anyone is "You must try this place" but make sure you are very hungry.
