We had a great trip here with friends. The railroad excursion was an absolute great ride! So glad we could make it.

We paid for first class tickets for our family of 5. We rode in the Prospective car and the money was absolutely worth It! Plenty of space, a tour guide just for our car who also acted as our server, unlimited beverages, free snacks and a pile of free souvenirs made our trip extra special! Sierra was the super helpful, very knowledgeable guide for our car and she was constantly offering more drinks to us. We did the half trip to Cascade as it is still winter here. For our young girls, the 5 hour trip was just right. The views from the train are amazing and this trip is definitely a "must do" attraction when in Durango. Pay for the first class tickets...so worth it!!

Start in Durango and do the full retun trip. It's long, but every click & clack of the scenery is awesome. Walk around from car to car, and change seats from side to side. Just don't lean out! Bad idea. If you do this in late September you will get to see the Aspen and Cottonwood Show in the hills. Golden leaves make every photo better.

The train ride was slow but wonderful and well worth the money we paid. The scenery was absolutely beautiful. We were kept well informed on the locations we were passing by our guide. He had extensive knowledge of the area and its history. I would recommend sitting inside unless you don't mind being covered in soot as you sit in the open carriage. The best part aside from the scenery was the lady that greets you at every intersection leading from Durango. We really had fun just waiting to see if she would be at the next intersection!

We went on a pre-booked trip. The morning was dreary and a light drizzle was falling. Our car attendant was welcoming and did a great job of making sure we were comfortable and provided coffe (or other choices) quickly. We had chosen the dome car and it was a great choice although a more expensive option. Since this car was the last on the train we were able to get great pictures from the rear platform. Fortunately the day improved with bright sun by the lunch stop at Cascade. We had pre-ordered lunches and these were nicely made sandwiches with chips, apple and cookie. A very enjoyable day with magnificant scenery.
