I've visited the General Palmer many times over the years, which date back to the days when the hotel featured a full-service bar, replete with a beautiful oil painting of General Palme, and a decent breakfast. Time has worn on, and the hotel has gone noticeably downhill. In spite of making reservations six months in advance, we were dismayed to learn, upon arrival, that we were to be housed in the dreaded Annex. The room wasn't so bad, we found, although it fell fall far short of the luxury to be experienced in the main hotel. Although I had sold my wife on the hotel based on their placing teddy bears on the bed, none were provided; it seems that this privilege is not extended to the Annex. One thing that concerned us about the Annex was the lack of security... anyone could walk up the back stairway and gain entrance to the second-story deck and passageway along which the rooms are situated. On the plus side there was a view of the D&S station out the back window, and the deck provided a splendid view of the trains arriving in the afternoon. The provided breakfast voucher didn't meet our needs for boarding the first D&S train, due to its 7AM opening time, but there was a Starbucks across the street that did the trick. With all that said, I still believe the General Palmer is a beautiful, historic hotel that is well worth a visit, but next time I will insist on staying in the main building rather than the Annex.
