This trail has some challengingly areas, but overall not too difficult. Hubby and I are in our 70's, and we managed to complete the 6 mile loop. Great views of the town. Thanks to the lady at the visitor center who recommended this hike. I appreciated how well the trial is marked.

We loved this hike! We had four in our party, ages 49,39,20 and 12. Two are in good shape and two do moderate exercise. It was great for everyone! Being able to see the town and all of its landmarks in one afternoon is perfect! We had only been at altitude for 4 days so it was a challenging hike on the lungs. Rightfully so as the elevation gain is about 1,800 ft. It's best to grab a can of oxygen to take along with you with plenty of water. It took us about 4 hours to complete and that included rest and picture stops along the way! You get to see the town, waterfalls, bridges, rivers, aspen forests, mountains, ice park, baby bathtubs formation etc. all on this one trail. Tip: if you want to see Box Canyon Waterfall on this hike, you will need to detour down to the Visitors center and pat to do so. You can then go down to see the falls and then come back up and pick up on the Perimeter Trail where you left off! So many great picture opportunities! It's the best way to see Ouray and it's free! Definitely take a map as well. The section around the baby bathtubs isn't marked well in some parts and can be confusing.

Great views on all sides of Ouray from the Perimeter Trail! We spent 3 hours and did about 80% of the trail. Great way to get a feel for the Ouray area while we were driving from Durango to Moab. Hope to come back and spend more time some day!

This six-mile trail system has been constructed in segments that now allow hikers to circumnavigate the entire town. Some sections such as along the west side of the Uncompahgre River through town are easy for strolling and other parts across Oak Creek and up through Box Canyon are more challenging. The Perimeter Trail intersects many other popular hiking trails and the Ice Park area which allows access without moving a vehicle from the hotel/motel parking lot.

This hike has lots of ups and downs, some easier than others but nothing that a relatively in shape person can't handle. We did get off track but because there are several trails that go back down to the town we were able to find our way fairly easily. Be sure to bring water, a hat, sunscreen, and your phone. It is the quintessential hike in Ouray.
