The museum is small (it's In a historic waterworks building) but it packs in a lot of history. Pagosa Springs was not a mining town, but was a logging and ranching area. Real pioneer families, hardy people who homesteaded the mountains with an ax and a rifle. If you're into history, it has some pretty interesting stuff from those days, and the stories that go along. If you were the teacher in the one-room school house, your job included fetching a bucket of water and building a fire in the wood stove every morning.
This little museum is a nice collection of local history artifacts, and well worth the stop. The gift shop is also a blast from the past - hand-made items, and those stencils you can iron on to white tea towels to embroider. The lady at the counter was very nice and informative. Some really cool old items on display.
Great little museum with interesting items. We spent less than an hour. It was worth the donation. We are grateful for the volunteers willing to open this collection to the public. The quilts demonstrated marvelous workmanship. Great little western museum jam packed.
It had a lot of stories about Pagosa Springs. We enjoyed it tremendously. We urge people to go see it got themselves. You won't be disappointed.
Was very surprised to learn the town had a woman doctor in its early years. It is well organized and it has a dedicated staff of volunteers who take the time to answer questions. No cost to go through it....but a donation may be something you would like to leave.
My husband and I stopped on a whim to see what was up with this museum. He's been to Pagosa at least 50 times and never took the time to stop. We were very pleasantly surprised with the number of historical items and the history of Pagosa. Help support this little Museum so it doesn't close!
