We hiked this trail on November 6 as there was very little snow for this time of year, which is unusual. We did the entire loop starting from Fancy Pass over to Missouri Lakes and back to parking lot. Both trailheads are next to each other. It is a 10.5 miles hike and took us just under 6 hours with stops. The views are absolutely beautiful. If you are not use to hiking, this may not be for you as you gain just under 2700 feet in elevation. Fancy Lake is beautiful then you climb up Fancy Pass, which has boulders, and then on the back side it opens to beautiful meadows and 2 lakes. You walk through a meadow up Missouri Pass and once on top beautiful views of the lakes. The trial winds through the lakes and the views are breathtaking. You definitely will not be disappointed. The trails are well traveled. If you decide to hike both loops together, the trail either way, clockwise or counterclockwise, are breathtaking. However, I suggest counterclockwise as it would be easier to climb up the boulders on Fancy Pass versus coming down if not use to hiking boulders.

Awesome hike, Missouri Lakes are beautiful and a great place for a picnic. Not for inexperienced hikes, need a fairly early start and should be acclimated and in good shape.

This is a true classic.
The trail stars out easy, but soon it gets a little tougher with some steeper elevation and terrain variations. I would say the trail guid is right on with their evaluation of moderate to difficult rating. Bring lots of water and a good camera, a hiking stick will help the folks that are not proficiante with going down hill.
For hikers that are fit, the loop route is a long day for sure, but very rewarding.
Get a early start if you can, as weather in the high country can change rapidly.
This is a popular trail, so expect traffic on busy summer weekends.

This was our second attempt to see Missouri lake only to be snowed in and unable to get to the end of the trail. This time, we probably got within 100 yards of the lake but still too much snow at the end even in late June. That being said, the trail did not disappoint. This was the only trail I've been on that was beautiful throughout. Plenty of amazing sites (clearings, waterfalls, mountains) all along the trail. The hike is about 6 miles round trip and there are not too many steep sections, so plan on about 4 hours. Getting to the trail head is a little difficult but I did it without a 4x4. Protrails gives the coordinates and google maps took me straight there.

This is one of my favorite trails in Eagle County to hike. The opportunity to camp at one of the many lakes at tree line make this a great place to spend more than a few days. Don't forget your fly pole as the main large lake has some wonderful fishing. For an added bonus take the trek over the pass overlooking treasure vault lake and the upper cross creek valley. This wilderness area is so remote that nature is at it's peak.
