The Charcoal Grill is a Brazilian churrascaria, a restaurant where various meats are grilled on a huge skewer and carved right onto your plate. The meats are accompanied by a buffet of side dishes. We chose to give Charcoal Grill a try because of a coupon and are very glad that we did. The restaurant seems to be popular with Brazilians who live in the neighborhood, but the owners are very welcoming and made us feel right at home, too.
The grilled meats were so delicious. We really loved the smoky grill flavor of the beef. You get a plate and go up to the grill where the grill person asks you what meats you want, how done you want it, and how much fat you like. My beef was a perfect portion of lean, medium rare. There was also lamb, various parts of chicken, sausages, and other tasty things. Then you go to the buffet where there are several green salads, potato salad, pasta salad, roasted potato, two kinds of beans, two kinds of rice, plantains, and more. There were also tilapia and shrimp. Anyone watching their calories, cholesterol, or wanting vegetarian could get a full meal here. A special mention goes out for the "compania sauce," a fresh relish of tomato, onion, and green pepper that goes perfectly with Brazilian BBQ.
The restaurant has a small bar and also serves fresh fruit juices, in addition to the usual beverages. Oh, and I can't forget the totally fabulous flan -- one of the best I've had.
The prices were really low for the amount and quality. You can either pay by the pound or get unlimited food for around $21 or $22. I took the "by the pound" option and paid less than $10 for a huge dinner plate covered with food. Another person took the all-inclusive because he wanted to go back to try every meat. We both felt that we got a great deal.
The restaurant is just over the line a couple blocks from West Hartford in a nice, well-lit area. We easily found free parking on the street. Very casual atmosphere. I really liked this place and will go back.
