We're fortunate enough to live just a couple miles away and patronize this standout regional Italian oasis as frequently as our schedules allow. The owners, a generous and gregarious married couple with deep familial roots in southern Italy, are almost always present, making sure that every diner is well-informed and very well feed. The fare is always fresh and consistently excellent and, when we close our eyes, eating here is like being in the old country.

Saw the sign for lunch!! so excited as we always seem to go by in the afternoon-and it is closed. It was not busy but the place is immaculate, simply but tastefully decorated, wait staff attentive and professionally turned out. The bread to be dipped in excellent olive oil was perfect-the eggplant appetizer thinly sliced and perfectly cooked and seasoned-sauce so very delicious! My focaccia with tuna, capers and seasonings was light and fresh-I ordered a wine on recommendation of waiter and it was perfect with the sandwich--and my husband had a wonderful chicken dish-I finished with my favorite, panna cotta and cannot wait to go back for dinner! What a treat to finally find a real offering of perfectly prepared and so delicious!! food. If you want to enjoy every bite, this is the place!!

I dined here while on a mother/daughter vacation weekend to Old Saybrook. I found the restaurant on Open Table and am so glad I did! The food was fantastic! If I lived in the area, I would definitely go there frequently.

Made reservation( 3) for 7 pm on a busy hot summer Sunday.

Is a Nice large and well appointed restaurant with large attractive bar and ample seating areas.

There are quite a few waiters. Some more experienced than others....

We waited about 10 min for our table in the very back of the restaurant. Ok table. No view.
With tablecloth and nice silverware.

Ordered a beer and some waters.

Then it took another 15 minutes to place our order. Not exactly speedy at this restaurant.

Finally placed order for a house salad , an arugula and prosciutto pizza, a pork chop and 1 lasagna.

The food took about 30 minutes to finally arrive.

The pork chop was about $30.
The pizza was $16.
The lasagna about $23.

The house salad cost around $10.

The food was all properly cooked.
The pork chop , large, long trimmed bone, juicy and nicely charred.

The arugula pizza had a large qty of raw arugula on top of a hot prosciutto and cheese pizza. Very nice. Price for this ok.

The lasagna was ample, pretty good. But nothing special.

All in all pretty pricey food. Portions not large. Even pasta was priced from $23-30!

The kitchen cooks well.
Service is variable.
Prices are high for what they are serving.

We arrived at La Marea for lunch and were immediately unimpressed with the ambiance. It definitely did not seem welcoming or cozy as we thought it would be at a nice Italian restaurant.

Still, we ordered the entree with chicken without much thought because the menu description sounded appealing, and one woman said that this dish was "spectacular." Unfortunately, the dish itself didn't live up to the hype. First of all, half of the dish was bitter broccoli rabe. I understand that broccoli rabe is bitter, but that part of the dish wasn't stated on the menu. Had it been stated, we wouldn't have ordered it. Chicken was okay, although not as tender as we'd hoped, and the potatoes were the only part that we truly liked. Keep in mind, the potatoes were never mentioned in the menu description! The dish was smothered in oil. Even the portion size was too small for a dish worth almost $20, especially considering that only half was edible because of the broccoli rabe.

We returned the dish and ordered some Margherita pizza because we were hungry. We were not charged for the previous meal, which was the only positive. Even the pizza was gross. Its crust wasn't thick, which is a plus, but it was filled with greasy tomato sauce and a bit of cheese. Almost made us sick. Maybe McDonalds would serve this kind of pizza. The saddest part is that we aren't super picky; we just appreciate yummy food and we couldn't even get that here. Save your money and take a trip to Anthony J's in Mystic or even Castello's in Niantic and you'll find good pizza. Anthony J's in particular is awesome!

The waiters were also rude and looked at us in a very condescending way. Just the little cherry on top to our disappointing visit. We won't be back, and we encourage people who are thinking about going to this restaurant to stay away unless they like wasting money on bad food. All of these glowing reviews are confusing to me. Maybe the owners wrote them?
