“Small but impressive”

Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum

The place sits back next to a church and you can drive right past, but it's worth turning around for. The art is truly contemporary, cutting edge and engaging. The museum only has 2 floors in addition to any outside installations. Easy to tour the entire property in about 2 hours.

I have been coming to shows at this museum for years. They do not have a permanent collection. Instead they focus on large and small scale shows of artists who many do not know, even some famous, but all worth seeing and discussing. The current shows include the disassembly of an entire harvester and a set of "proposals" for art projects in and around the building. You have to take time with the shows here...they always make you stop and think. Read the brochures and wall info. And sometimes you will not "get it" until days later.
There were families with children looking at the current shows..they are not aimed at kids, but with the right parents, I believe children benefit.
There is ample parking, and Ridgefield is a nice place to linger for a meal before or after a museum visit.

I went to visit this on my way but it was too small, poorly signposted, faced with three large covered items in the front lawn ?trees or ?sculptures, the car park was poorly signed too and was not sure if the parking belonged to the museum or not, was not sure if it was open or closed, no sign to welcome visitors and advise about opening times, entry fees or other wise. I did not feel welcome so I left.

We did not expect that this small town would have a contemporary art museum of this caliber. Apparently the foundation chose to get rid of it's permanent collection and move to featuring a small number of artists whom they present for a period of time. The offering reminded us of the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum in Berlin (Germany.) We were treated to a personal tour by the very knowledgeable docent and were enthralled by the inside-outside nature of the exhibits. All in all, a wonderful "find."

If you like modern art then this is a good bet. Not too large so you can stop by for an hour or two and see three or four distinct modern exhibitions. Many times they have art and sculpture outside too and the grounds are beautiful. Fun to even sit outside in their amphitheater and just enjoy a few moments of peace. Plenty of parking and easy walk into town along main street for lunch or ice cream. Check the schedule as they often have art programs just for kids where they learn about art and get to make things, very cool!
