We started with drinks by the bar in the pateo, I strongly recommend the Green Tea Caipiroska, while we waited for our table we requested on the outside (other side of restaurant). Very nice and service minded staff. Ordered a sushi platter sampler, which was great and then had Kobe Beef + a couple of sides. You HAVE to try the Kobe Beef if you go here, you sear it yourself on a hot stone on the table - very nice. Everything is plated artistically and pretty and tastes amazing. A little pricey but very worth it thanks to the quality of the food and also the armosphere. Definitely going back!

Yes. The medium fatty tuna sashimi style was to die for, but so were other items on the menu. Loved the short rib noodles. Skipped the Kobe hit rock. The presentation of that dish at Japponais in Chicago is more exciting.

Service was superb. Wait staff was surprisingly real for Miami. Jeans and black T's... Not all Vegas and plastic. We could only score an early reservation on Open Table, so we ended up here with a lot of families with younger children. Thankfully, all were quiet and behaved.

My gin cocktail was a large serving and interesting blend of tastes -- grapefruit juice was one ingredient, so anyone on Lipitor will have to try a different martini to start. Edamame was the only disappointing item we ordered. When we told the server, she immediately took it off our check.

Try at least one hot and one cold app; one sushi order and whatever else floats your boat. Stay sober enough for window shopping or real shopping in the outstanding stores at Bal Harbour mall.

Don't let the mall location fool you. This is not a typical mall-located restaurant. Not at all. PF Changs is Panda Express compared with Makoto. Maokotobis on par with Nobu, Buddakan and Japponais -- not mall food at all!

Pretentious and way over priced. Although the sushi was good it should have been spectacular for the price. Grilled shrimp was good but only two in the order. Garlic spinach was delicious. You could leave here hungry if you don't order right.

Super fresh fish (with exotics). Unique Japanese fare (frozen diced Kobe beef in house-made fried rice!!!???!!!), great staff/team. Ramen and soba are delicious (though neither noodle is made in-house, and the soba sauce is a bit heavy). Great sake selection.

My husband and I fell in love with japanese food (not necessarily sushi, but more izakaya) on our honeymoon in Hawaii. Now, every time we are traveling, we look for a new place for japanese food. I had read some reviews about Makoto, but seeing as we had made reservations at Nobu, my expectations weren't high. Even though Makoto has great reviews, Nobu had always had our hearts. Well, that changed.
Makoto was phenomenal. Firstly it is inside the most lavish of malls, filled with stores that are not exactly tangible for us, however it is always fabulous to look!
The service at Makoto was fantastic. We were greeted by the manager and he was the loveliest french man.
Now for the food.
We had learned that "rock shrimp" was divine while honeymooning in hawaii, but this rock shrimp was sublime. It comes with two different sauces, each one as heavenly as the other!
We had the short rib yaki noodles. Oustanding! the earthiness of the mushrooms mixed with the tenderness of the meat was beautiful. The fresh noodles were wonderful and the fresh salad onto made it a most balanced dish!
My husband had the ceviche (I am currently 8 months pregnant) and he raved about how it was fantastic. We also had the Robata skewers of wyagu meat. Also beautiful, we had to order it well done (pregnancy) so it didn't do it the justice it deserved.
We were so enamoured with our experience here, that we went back two days later!
We ordered the rock shrimp and the yaki noodles, but this time we ordered the miso chilean sea bass and it was orgasmic! We had had this dish prepared with alaskan black cod before, but the buttery texture of the sea bass was just unreal! My husband had the tuna pizza, and again, he raved about it!
The prices are totally reasonable too!
This is truly a foodie haven!
