Owner description: Park With Beach And Restrooms For Entering Rainbow River
Reviewed 2 weeks ago

We went here to do a drift dive Scuba) off a party boat. Max depth 20-25 feet lots of interesting small springs The boat took us 45 minutes drifting time up river and then met us just before we got back to the park. The park it self is very clean an nice for its size. It's great for a quiet picnic and dip in the water or kayaking. The changing rooms are very clean and come with nice clean restrooms. .

We put the kayak in here and paddled up to rainbow river... probably about 30 mins. It wasn't crowded at all the day we were there but I can see how it probably will be in the height of the season and you would want to get there early.

You should definitely go to the KP Hole, and float down the river. This is something all of the locals do, probably 100 times in my childhood/teen years living nearby. Therefore--a lot of people that are not local seem to be unclear because it is not really set up as a tourist deal, although it's (unfortunately imo) headed that way. They now offer the shuttle that picks you up at the end, which is overpriced but I guess okay if it is your only option because you have one car. If you can get a second vehicle with you (another family or friends, etc), you just need to park one at the take out spot, and then one at the park itself where you go in to start your float. This saves a lot of money (and time, you don't have to wait on the shuttle), and you can just get a $4 float from the walmart down the street before going and can use it for other things after. I always do this, works great. To get a parking spot at the take out, you would definitely need to be there by 8:30-9 on the weekend, a good rule for the week day too in the summer just to be sure. Interestingly, there is a ton of parking at the start location, but hardly any at the take-out...$$$.

I saw someone upset about the lightning--Yes, nobody is going to pick you up anywhere except at the end (only if you paid for the shuttle) if it starts storming. If you start after 10, especially after 11AM in the summer (and well, it's Florida, probably most seasons) you can count on the storms starting before you get off the river most years. It takes about 4 hours to complete, but sometimes the current is slower and it can take 5-6. I think it's so beautiful, calm, and just a really nice experience (tan included) that it is worth the time. Dunnellon takes storms to a whole new level, excessive lightning--you do not want this experience on the river. Start early.

KP Hole does not have much itself--it has the booth where you pay that sells some things, bathroom, big long ramp to the water, and then a small swimming area. It's a place to get started on the water, not to actually spend time there really. You can bring a rope or something to tie your party's tubes together. Watch for wasp nests along the river--they are huge. Bring a mask, swim down and see the fish, sometimes turtles/otters.

Leave everything in your car that you don't want to leave in the river. They are strict recently about beer in your coolers--no alcohol is allowed and you cannot take plastic/disposable trash on the river--definitely adhere to the second one--it's a beautiful place and it'd be nice to keep it that way. Sometimes police are on the rivers, and you could be subject to a cooler inspection so keep it in mind. On the weekends people check at the KP Hole too. Wear sunscreen or bring a long sleeve shirt if you float down, you'll roast otherwise.

There is a take out location much sooner than the exit from KP--this is for the other business that floats where you pay more. It has a big ramp, you'll see people getting out. If you are coming from KP, this is not you--you wait until the bridge. You will feel like you've been going forever, so go with good company, sunscreen, waterproof camera, drinks and enjoy the beauty. You will finally go under a bridge, then the get-out spot is on the left. You won't miss it.

Be carrefull no kayak downstream during winter...for swimming prefers to go 3miles north to the rainbow spring state park.
