Nostalgic for "old Florida" lodging

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 8 Jan 2020
We didn't know places like this still exist! Right on the water, Sportsman's Lodge has suffered through several hurricanes and still bears scars, but owner (for 40 years) has made it a welcoming retreat and a real change from sterile hotel rooms on the interstate. We didn't want to leave. It's a great location between the shops and restaurants in Apalachicola and the pristine beaches of St. George's Island. Reasonable rates, and a world away.

I can’t say enough great things about the Sportsman’s Lodge - from its old Florida Charm to the Hospitality to the rates - this place is wonderful. When you arrive, you are greeted by beautiful peacocks beneath Spanish moss draped live oaks and An owner who is friendly and eager to please. She escorted us to what would be our home for the next few days and did a walk through to make sure everything was up to par before leaving us.

The room, with kitchenette, is quite large and has 2 double beds and a dining table placed perfectly to take in the breathtaking views of the bay out the double sliders. Everything is clean and updated. The bathroom is comfortable and I LOVE the heat lamps to knock off the chill as I dry from a long shower.

Right outside our door, we have a patio set for lounging or eating as we take in a sunset over the bay. We have a grill that we can use for cooking up the days catch or a nice steaks. Speaking of catching-there are 2 nice fish cleaning stations on the ground.

The bonus- the coffee cabana in the mornings has fresh brewed coffees and pastries. It’s a Fun place to relax and sip a cup and exchange fish tales or stories about the grandkids.

All in all - we fell in love the sportsman’s lodge from its comfortable rooms to all its amenities and the friendly staff. It’s not modern, it’s not new, but it has character and charm. We can’t wait until our next visit. So if you’re looking for a clean, comfort place where your fur baby is welcome and you can relax, this is it.

Best place to stay! ‘The Spot!’ Mrs. Etta treats you like family. So did Mr. Bob. We miss him dearly!
Pa & I come & stay at ‘The Spot’ every 3-4 months. With @martha rooks booth, & other friends. Peacocks 🦚 and squirrels 🐿 galore! Oh, and the most beautiful sunsets!

Hurricane Matthew hit Mexico Beach in Oct 2018...and Lodge had some damage, and they need us to visit, so us being from New Orleans we had (Katrina) and know that you need support, and the business after something like that. So we decided to visit and have a nice peaceful Spring vacation here. We have been here numerous times, and it is a great local place to stay. Food is great in area. A lot to see and do also. No pool, but St George Island and Beach not far off. We always have a good stay there.

This place is in a great location. My boyfriend and I stayed there Nov., 2 through the 4th to go to the seafood festival in Apalachicola. We also took a quick trip to St. George's Island. They allow pets, which is great, since we took my three dogs. The room was neat and tidy, but it's a bit worn and dated (think seventies paneling). The carpet was a bit worn also. Our room had a small kitchen and the bathroom was very small. The bathroom barely had room for toilet and tub. The "bathroom" sink was located in the room beside the kitchen sink. The price was very reasonable and affordable. Between the location, price and cleanness, the room was a good value and I would stay again.

They suffered a lot of damage in the last hurricane, but it might be even better when they rebuild. The owner is a wonderful person and makes sure the rooms are really clean and the guests are comfortable. We were there for 4 days and wished we could have stayed longer. The location is ideal. What makes this place unusual is that it’s old fashioned and has a lot of peacocks that are fun to watch. We will go back when the hurricane damage is cleaned up.
